You should know: That Jerry Azumah, the record-setting running back from New Hampshire, has been switched to the defensive backfield and impressed the coaching staff early in training camp. And he won the 1998 Walter Payton Award.

In addition to the technical changes with the offense, the Bears will undergo a major personnel switch. McNown, drafted in April as the franchise's quarterback of the future, will presumably take over as the starter following the release of veteran Erik Kramer.

Aside from the first-round selection of McNown, the only other prominent newcomer to the offense is Blake Brockermeyer, who replaces Andy Heck at tackle.

McNown's main targets are expected to be veteran wide receivers Curtis Conway, and Bobby Engram. However, the various offensive schemes could create more opportunities for Mayes and other tight ends.

The Bears' success in the air will depend in part on the effectiveness of the ground game. Last year, Enis missed most of training camp and then most of the second half of the regular season with a knee injury. But regardless of Enis' production, Crowton has already worked on getting return specialist Glyn Milburn more involved out of the backfield.

Defensively, the Bears are looking for big improvements in the pass-rushing area. Veteran free agents Jamal Duff and Clyde Simmons were brought in as well as second-round draft pick Russell Davis.

Perhaps the most important transaction at linebacker was retaining the services of veteran Sean Harris. In the secondary, the Bears will have to overcome the departure of safety Marty Carter and get acclimated to the addition of cornerback Chris Canty.

Special teams as the Bears kicker Jeff Jaeger is hurt, punter Todd Sauerbrun and Milburn, the primary return man.
