Sam Giancana

Sam "Mooney" Giancana was born in 1908. He became a member of the 42nd Gang as a young hoodlum. Sam went away to prison for bootlegging, where he became acquainted with members of the Black Belts. When he got released from prison Sam new that to become a made member, he had to get the attention of the boss of the Chicago Mob. Giancana grabbed Tony Accardo's attention by coming up with a plan to take control of the numbers game. So with the help of some of Accardo's soldiers, Sam ambushed Eddie Jones. They kidnapped Jones and held him for a few days. When Jones was released he moved to Mexico leaving the South Side wide open for the Outfit. Giancana was welcomed into the Outfit and proved to be a capable soldier. Sam and other members of the Outfit were investigated by the McClellan Committee. The Committee charged them with trying to control the restaurant bussiness in Chicago (no convictions were handed down). Sam became Accardo's underboss and learned much from his boss. When Accardo decided to retire he gave Giancana control of the outfit. The arrangement was for Giancana to run the everyday operations of the Oufit and for Accardo to serve as the Consigliere. Sam proved to be a pretty good choice for boss. His only weakness was his love of the attention from the media. Sam loved to limelight and the media loved giving it to him. Along with the attention came the F.B.I. The "G" hounded Giancana throughout his entire reign as boss. They bugged his headquarters and maintained heavy survailence on the Outfit. The begiging of the end for Giancana came when he sent a message to the F.B.I. saying that Frank Sinatra was the Outfit's go between for Kennedy. This action infuriated Accordo. Tony then decided that Sam's high profile life was just to much for the Outfit to take. So Accardo and Giancana had a sit-down, where Accardo relieved Sam of his duties and in effect stripped his of his power. Sam then moved to Mexico City and quickly established a vast gambling empire. Giancana was making millions of dollars without giving one penny to the Outfit (since Accardo did send him packing). Eventually Sam was deported back to the U.S. where he returned to Chicago. He was allowed to make his home there for a stretch of time. Then on June 18, 1975 Sam (recovering from surgery) hosted a party for his pals, Butch and Chuckie English. Later that night Sam "Mooney" Giancana was found dead in his basement. He died of multiple gun shot wounds to the body and a point blank shot to the head.
