Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) has just transferred from Los Angeles to small-town Sunnydale High, where her natural-born talents as a Slayer come in handy: Sunnydale is built on a Hellmouth, or gateway to the underworld.

03/10/97: The Harvest
The weakened Master, long trapped in the Hellmouth, can escape if his vampires suck enough reviving lifeblood from Sunnydale teens. So it’s bye-bye to Buffy’s new pal Jesse (Eric Balfour).

03/17/97: The Witch (episode 4V03)
When cheerleaders start spontaneously combusting, Buffy suspects a witch is in their midst.

03/25/97: Teacher's Pet
Xander is nearly seduced by a voluptuous substitute science teacher who transforms into a large praying mantis.

03/31/97: Never Kill a Boy on the First Date (episode 4V05)
When Buffy goes on a date, the Master plots her demise by calling on a warrior vampire.

04/07/97: The Pack (episode 4V06)
Sneaking into the hyena exhibit at the zoo leaves Xander and pals in an altered state.

04/14/97: Angel
After the ever-mysterious but oh-so-sexy Angel kisses Buffy, his face breaks out — into a vampire’s fanged features. Now we know why he’s so well informed about bloodsuckers: He has had more than two centuries of experience. Still, Angel is appropriately named, since the gypsies he once ravaged cursed him with a soul.

04/28/97: I Robot, You Jane
An ancient, enchanted tome purchased by Giles for the library gets scanned into the Sunnydale computer system, and an evil spirit named Moloch is unleashed in cyberspace. The ancient demon (mentioned, by the way, in Milton’s Paradise Lost) eventually inhabits a robot, but not before attempting to seduce Willow via the Internet. Ultimately, Buffy short-circuits Moloch and his plans.

05/05/97: The Puppet Show
Principal Flutie’s menacing replacement, Principal Snyder (Armin Shimerman), orders Giles, Buffy and friends to stage the high school’s talent show. And at Sunnydale, a contestant’s "loss of heart" isn’t a figure of speech. An organ-stealing demon is responsible, so a ghostbuster trapped in a ventriloquist’s dummy named Sid is recruited to make things right.

09/15/97: When She Was Bad
Buffy, having been killed by the Master and revived by Xander, gets posttraumatic stress and turns against her friends. Her bad mood and worse judgment almost get everyone killed.

09/22/97: Some Assembly Required
The science-nerd brother of a dead Sunnydale football hero has rebuilt the former gridiron star from various corpses, and now the Franken-jock wants a girl with a body
to die for.

09/29/97: School Hard
On threat of expulsion, Buffy organizes a Parent-Teacher Night, an endeavor only slightly more pleasant than the latest arrivals in Sunnydale: Spike (James Marsters) and Drusilla (Juliet Landau).

10/06/97: Inca Mummy Girl
Xander’s bad luck with women continues. This time he falls for Ampata (Ara Celi), a Peruvian exchange student who is actually a 500-year-old Inca princess recently transformed from her mummified remains. Ampata wants never to show her true age again, and will drain the breath from anyone to remain young.

10/13/97: Reptile Boy (episode 5V05)
A snake-like creature awaits human sacrifices at a fraternity bash.

10/27/97: Halloween (episode 5V06)
Buffy loses her slaying abilities while wearing a Halloween costume.

11/03/97: Lie To Me
Buffy’s fifth-grade crush Billy "Ford" Fordham (Jason Behr) transfers to Sunnydale, with hopes of persuading Spike to make him and his Goth friends real vampires.

11/10/97: The Dark Age
Eyghon, a "sleepwalker" demon (so called because it possesses the bodies of unconscious people and corpses) stalks Sunnydale, and it’s all thanks to Giles. The bond between the Watcher and the enigmatic Ethan Rayne (episode 18) is explained in "The Dark Age": During their youthful days in London, the two thrill seekers toyed with the occult, allowing themselves to be possessed by Eyghon only to cast the demon quickly back into the netherworld. And this is one devil who won’t let bygones be bygones.

11/17/97: What's My Line Pt.1
Career Week at Sunnydale High usually means getting through those absurd aptitude tests with such questions as, "Do you like shrubs?" But this year Buffy must survive something far more sinister: the Order of Taraka, a lethal group of bounty hunters. Also new on the scene: the beautiful Kendra (Bianca Lawson), who claims that she, too, is a Slayer.

11/24/97: What's My Line Pt. 2
Giles learns that the arrival of Kendra was triggered by Buffy’s death ("Just a little!" she protests) during episode 12. Angel needs rescuing from Spike, who wants to sacrifice Buffy’s love vampire to cure the ailing Drusilla. And Xander and Cordelia get trapped by a pile of flesh-eating worms.

12/08/97: Ted (episode 5V11)
Buffy is suspicious of her mom's new boyfriend (John Ritter).

01/12/98: Bad Eggs (episode 5V12)
Two cowboy vampires are gunning for Buffy, whose liaisons with Angel continue.

04/28/98: I Only Have Eyes For You
The Sadie Hawkins Day Dance has a special meaning at Sunnydale High: In 1955, on the day when girls do the asking, a boy did the shooting, killing his teacher (and lover), Miss Newman, before turning the gun on himself. Today, their spirits haunt the halls, possessing others and forcing the reenactment of the crime over and over. When Buffy and Angel get taken — Buffy by the boy, Angel by the teacher — they reenact the fight, but this time with a happier (or at least more forgiving) ending. The troubled poltergeists can rest in peace.

Buffy goes looking for trouble in the lair of Warren, Andrew and Jonathan, the three nerds obsessed with her destruction, and she nearly falls victim to a booby trap of buzz saws. Warren acquires the Orbs of Nezzla'khan, a pair of demonic talismans that he says imbue him with "strength, invulnerability...the deluxe package," thus setting the stage for a fateful showdown.
