HOLLON, RANDOLPH AND CAROLINE STURDIVANT
Randolph Hollon (1800 - 1863) and Caroline Sturdivant (1809 - 1883)
were married
In 1828 in Jones County, Georgia. They settled in 1829 near what is
now Hollonville
in Pike County, where Randolph died in 1863. About 1871, Caroline moved
with her
children to Klondike, Delta County,' Texas, where she died in 1883.
The life of Randolph Hollon is presented in Frank M. Johnson, A History
of Texas and
Texans, 1914, Volume 5, Page 2339:
Randolph Hollon was born in North Carolina in 1800; in that State grew
into unlettered manhood and then went to Georgia to make his mark. He became
a planter and dealt in slaves, and was worth about a hundred thousand dollars
before the war. He established a store on his farm, which took the name
of Hollonville and which became the center of a busy commercial community
before he passed away in 1863. Being a. slave dealer and owner and a man
of Southern birth, his attitude was that of an uncompromising rebel, and
he took pride in sending his sons out to fight for the principles in which
he believed. Five of his sons took up arms in defense of the Confederate
Government. He belonged to no church or society, and his life seems to
have been absorbed in the pleasure of money-making. While he never learned
to write even his name, yet his judgment was unerring and he matched wits
with knowledge to his own advantage every day of his life. His mother was
before her marriage Miss Hannah Bond. Her children were Mary, wife
of John Stewart, of Georgia; Randolph and William, who died in Pale
Pinto County,
Texas.
We can supplement this sketch from Johnson with facts found in Georgia records.
The 1860 census of Pike County advises that Randolph Hollon held real
estate valued at
13,230 and a personal estate, which would include slaves, valued at
$26,035; his holdings
were among the largest in the county, but did not approach the $100,000
figure given by
Mr. Johnson. The same census shows that Hannah Bond Hollon, a native
of North Carolina and mother of Randolph, was living in Randolph' s household
in 1860, at which time she was 93 years old (therefore born about 1767).
The 1850 and 1660 censuses of Pike County and other Georgia records disagree
with the Mr. Johnson sketch in several minor details; for example, both
censuses give South Carolina as the birthplace of Randolph Hollon, whereas
Johnson gives North Carolina. When Randolph Hollon died in 1863, his Pike
County estate records included a payment of $200 to a Mrs. Britt for nursing
smallpox, the probable cause of his death. His widow and seven surviving
children each received land and $1,220 in gold. Randolph' s tomb is in
the cemetery at Hollonville and his name, carved by hand in the hard rock,
can still be read when the light is right. (NOTE 11-17-1998 Someone has
put up a new headstone for Randolph
Born 1800 Died 1-27-1863
And a stone for Caroline saying " Caroline Sturdivant born 4-27-1809
died 7-5-1883
Buried Gough Delta Co., Texas".
Randolph and Caroline were the parents of twelve children: (1) Hannah
Hollon (1830 -
1887), married about 1846 to Alexander Irvin (murdered in 1863). Hannah
and her three
sons migrated with her Hollon relatives to Klondike, Delta County,
Texas. (2) Mary
Margaret Hollon (born about 1832), no further record. (3) William R.
Hollon (1834
- 1904), married first 1853 to Louisa F. Anderson (died 1861) and second
to Grissale
Elizabeth Threlkeld. Served in the 53rd Georgia Infantry, wounded at
Antietam
Creek near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Died at Mineral Wells, Texas. (4)
Elizabeth S. Hollon (born 1836; died after 1870), no further record. (5)
Thomas J. Hollon (born 1839; died after 1870, Delta County, Texas). (6)
George W. Hollon (1840 - 1866), died in Waco, Texas. (7) Columbus H·
Hollon (born 1843), no further record. (8) Daniel Pinkney Hollon (1845
- 1927), married 1867 to Malinda D. Johnson, died in Delta County, Texas.
(9) Caroline Hollon (born 1847; died during 1850 - 1860).
(10) Charles E· Hollon (born 1848; died during 1860 - 1863).
(11) Celestia O.
Hollon (1853 - 1872), married 1870 to Jose D. Roddy. Where did they
settle?
(12) Theresa Hollon, whose place in the birth order is not known; she
must have died before 1863, as she did not share in her father's estate.
