their.bird and animal feeders. Deer are often seen on thei:r lawn as are
other wild animals.
Harry enjoys fishing, camping and photography. He is especially interested
and knowledgable in Lapadary work and is very good with it.
Velma Cleora Brouard received her early schooling in a one-room school, a
mile from her home. Mrs. Farr was her only teacher for 8 years. Her high
school days were spent at Plainwell High, where she graduated in1934.
Her father died in 1935 as a result of a farm accident. Her mother passed
away 10 years later from a heart attack. Velma then made her home with a
sister and family at Hickory Corners, Michigan.
At this time she was employed at the UpJohn Co. of Kalamazoo where she
commuted each day. She has many happy memories of watching, loving and
helping raise five nieces and nephews.
On April 11, 1964, Velma married Harry F. Kurtz, Jr. at the Dewey's home
in Hickory Corners. They both worked'at UpJohn and commuted from Kalamazoo

located on the homestead where she grew up. It is a Centennial Farm, being
in the same family since 1843.
Velma retired from UpJohn Co. in 1974 and has enjoyed being able to give
more time to her hobbies of sewing, refinishing furniture, making plaques
and decoupage, gardening and cooking. She remembers a maternal grand-
father and a paternal grandmother, the later being a descendant of Wm.
