F. Townsend received his schooling in the Hastings schools. Soon after he entered
the Army in Dec.12 1942, and took his Basic training at Fort Lewis, WA. While
therehe was hospitalized and had a hernia operation. When recovered, he was sent
to the Mojave Desert near Needles, CA. for further training. They were transferred
to a debarkation point at Camp Stevens, CA. They sailed to the Hawaiian Islands
and spent eighteen months on the Island of Kauai. From there to New Guinea in
the Pacific where he was assigned to the contingent of infantry guarding the
coast. He also served in the Philippines where they were under heavy fire while
taking Baguio Mountain. Casualities were heavy before reaching the top and then
holding it. Eventually they were sent to Japan and finally they returned to the
States with impaired health as were so many of the boys who served in the fever
laden jungles of the Pacific Theater of War.
Gilbert received his Honorable Discharge at Camp McCoy,WI. Jan. 14, 1946. His
serial # 36415322.
Gilbert was a truck driver for L.E. Meyers a contractor for Consumers Power Co.
for many years . He also worked as an Electrician, learning this business from
his father.
