Ebenezer
STILL was born about 1766. He was a Farmer in 1800 in Wayne Co., NY.. He
died on 8 Feb 1848 in Home in Walworth, Wayne Co., NY..
(28) He was buried in West Walworth Cemetery, Wayne Co., NY..
(28) Very little is actually known about Ebenezer
as to appearance or
personality. We do have facts of his activities obtained at the Wayne County
Court House and Wayne County Historical Society at Lyons,New York. He
enlisted in the "Army of the Revolution" as a private in March,1781,in
the
10th Mass.Reg. commanded by Colonel Tupper and in 1782 consolidated into
the 6th Mass. Later they were "shifted" into the 2nd Reg. and in 1784
received an honorable discharge. As he was born in 1766 he could have
been scarcely 15 years of age. He was from Westfield,Mass. No mention in
any of his papers of his father or any relatives. Written in the family
records is Norton's "Grandfather came from Sweden in the English Army -
3
brothers named Stilson who dropped the 'son' and stayed". It appears that
there may be much truth in it. There were several that could have been
Ebenezer's father or uncles that enlisted from that part of Mass. There
could also have been other brothers as the name " Stilson " is common
in
records researched.
Ebenezer had not received only a small part of his pay in 1786 and he
sold his " dischage " to a Mr. Baker for a " one horse cart "
as he had
given up hoping to collect. At this period where settlements were far
apart and none large enough to support a real business the businessmen
went from settlement to settlement, either horseback or wagon, carrying
their tools. Ebenezer was probably a boot-maker as several of his boys
were he could have made a good living with this trade while looking for a
good place to settle. This transaction had taken place in New Marborough,
several miles west of his home in Westfield. Five years later found him
in Windsor, several miles to the north. Here he was married to Susanna
Preston. Several years later we find them in Wayne Co.,NY. His will
mentions Walworth as his home which he bequeathed to his wife with the
estate, also 55 acres in Perrinton, Monroe Co.,NY. We have no clue to the
reason of their setting in Walworth and perhaps other places in Wayne
Co.,NY. but the Erie Canal could have been a deciding feature. This canal
was completed in 1822 and provided work for many until its completion.
Then it became their principal means of transportion, of produce as well
as travel. Walworth, Palmyra, Lyons and Macedon, all towns mentioned in
their records, are on or near this canal.
It also helped open up new lands in northern New York State. He had
moved from Westfield, Mass to western NY. His sons appeared to have the
same yearning for new territory. Of his 8 sons, three eventually settled
in Mich., one farther west in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, while still another
far west to Otoe Co.,Nebraska. The sons of which we have been able to
obtain records of wills, obituaries and land contracts have been good
citizens and neighbors which does credit to Ebenezer and Susanna as
parents.
Very little has been said of Susanna. We assume she was a strong,
capable woman. We have a record of fourteen children. Two have no birth
dates available. The remaining twelve lived to adult-hood. This was
unusal when so many babies didn't survive. Her husband respected her
intelligence and capabilities as he made her his sole heir in his will.
The will she left was well thought out. Found in West Walworth
Cemetery, Wayne Co., NY.

Edgar
STILL(11) was born on 9 Feb 1863 in
MN.. He died on 6 Nov 1933 in Selah, WA. He was buried in TAHOMA CEMETERY.
1. Edgar Elwood STILL was born February 09, 1863 in Minnesota,
and died November 06, 1933, in Selah, Washington, Buried Tahoma Cemetery. He
married Cloyed Pearl BAILEY April 22, 1900, in Irwin, Bingham County, IDAHO.
Daughter of Cloyed Bailey and Ruth Ballew.
Edgar Elwood Still was born February 9, 1863, in Minnesota. He also
lived in
Wyoming, Idaho, British Columbia, and Washington State. He married Cloyed
Pearl Bailey who was 18 years younger that he was April 22, 1900, in the state
of Idaho. Pearl had wanted to marry a boy her age and planned to go to
California with him. Her parents were strongly against the marriage and the
young man left for the West Coast alone. Pearl's parents felt that Edgar
Still was more suitable and stable for their daughter.
Edgar and Pearl had 10 children over a period of 25 years. Their first
son,
Cloyed Elwood was born March 2, 1901, at Idaho Falls, in Bonneville County.
Nellie Emogene was born 2 years later on January 1, 1903, also at Idaho Falls.
The family mostly lived the early years on farms in the country and had
no
other companions. The family had no religious background. Edgar worked for
neighbors doing farm labor. Pearl rented a house in Irving, Idaho so Cloyed
and Nellie could go to school and Edgar stayed at the ranch where he raised
hay and fed cattle that belonged to a cattle rancher. Edgar dreamed of owning
his own ranch but never could afford to purchase a place so moved from farm to
farm, raising share crops for other farmers
Harvey was born June 3, 1907, followed by Maud in 1909. Eugene Everett
was
born April 6, 1911, at Idaho Falls and 18 months later Ernest Raymond was born
at Poplar, Idaho. Jasper was born October 12, 1914, at Ketchum, Idaho.
In the summer of 1918, Edgar moved his family by horse drawn buggy to
the oil
fields near Casper, Wyoming. The trip took over a month and the family spent
some time seeing Yellowstone park. A large black bear attacked the buggy in
the park. Ruth Lenore was born December 18, 1918, at Casper. Edgar hauled
freight out of Jackson Hole, Wyoming with a team of horses. The "freight"
was
elk he and a friend shot and hauled to Casper where the fresh meat was sold to
butcher shops. This practice was illegal but game wardens were slack and meat
markets were glad to buy and resell the elk meat.
In 1921, the family moved to British Columbia to try to purchase a farm.
They had a new model T. Ford and an old model T flat bed truck. They carried
extra gas in a metal drum as gas stations were few and towns were far apart.
The family stayed in a clearing by a stream while Edgar and Cloyed
investigated the area looking for a suitable town to live. Edgar chose Renata
on the Columbia River called upper and lower Arrow Lakes. The family arrived
by barge and Edgar cut fire wood for the barge company. The family was not
well accepted in the town and the second year they left most of their
possessions and moved back to the oil fields of Wyoming where Edgar got
another oil pumping job. Harvey became ill with abdominal pains in 1920 and
was taken to a hospital in Casper, Wyoming. With poor surgery procedures, he
died from complications of appendicitis at the age of 13. Robert was born in
1922 at Salt Creek Station, # 5.
Nellie was the first of the children to be married. She married Arthur
Jamison on June 27, 1922, in Casper. Art worked in the oil fields and Edgar,
with his son Cloyed, worked for him. Art felt that Edgar had the ability to
be an excellent engineer. He said "Ed was able to lay out a ditch and run
oil
lines without anything other than a piece of string, a level, and his own
ability. Cloyed drove a truck in the oil fields for Art. Cloyed and Bessie
were married December 31, 1924, also in Casper. Pearl took the children and
moved to Boise, Idaho. Edgar moved to Kuna, Idaho and share cropped on a
farm. He acquired some machinery to make brooms. He raised a large crop of
broom corn. Pearl and the children pulled an old flat bed trailer around with
a few dozen brooms selling them in small quantities. They barely made enough
to see the family through the winter. The last child, Francis Richard was
born March 13, 1925, in Boise, Idaho. Maud married James Purcell in October
of 1925 and later moved to Thermolopis. Maud loved music and had natural
musical talent. With a little practice, she learned to play "just about
anything that came into her hands."
Trying to raise a family of 10 children on very little caused family
strife
and the age difference between Edgar and Pearl put a strain on their
relationship. Fishing and hunting were a way of life for the boys of the
family and provided food and survival for the family. The boys spent their
time roaming the hills and valleys wherever they lived hunting small game.
Their throwing arms became so accurate, they could kill a running rabbit with
a rock. They dropped home made hooks in any water they came too and learned
early to be proficient fishermen. Edgar did not usually join the boys when
they fished or hunted. Cloyed and Bessie spent their first year of marriage
in Wyoming, then moved to Washington State. Edgar and Pearl's first grandson,
Cloyed Arthur was born to Cloyed and Bessie July 24, 926 in Everett,
Washington. The same year Maud & James Purcell had Frankie, who died at
three
years of age. Maud & James were divorced and she married Howard Bliss.
The next move was to Yakima, Washington where Edgar managed a small farm
with
18 dairy cows, pigs, chickens and alfalfa hay. Edgar was to receive half of
the proceeds but problems with the owner caused the family to move to a camp
on the Yakima River and then to a house in Buenna where the family worked in
the apple packing sheds. They received 5 cents a box for peeling apples with
a rotary peeler. They could peel about 100 boxes a day. The family moved to
Selah the next winter and work was difficult to find. Edgar got a job pruning
fruit trees for 15 cents and hour. When summer came, the family followed the
harvest picking cherries, peaches, apricots, and apples.
Bessie and Cloyed named their second son, Edgar Clarence after his
Grandfather, Edgar, on November 4, 1927, in Everett. Maud and Howard Bliss
had followed the family to Yakima. She was killed in a theater accident in
1928 at Yakima, Washington. Howard Glen was born to Bessie and Cloyed June 9,
1929, at Baring, Washington. The early 1930s brought even harder times for
the Still family with the start of the Great Depression. Eugene married Olive
Meddock September 25, 1933, at Okanogan, Washington. They took a honeymoon
over Stevens Pass to visit Cloyed and Bessie and then went to Yakima and
worked in the apple harvest while living with his parents. Gene and Olive
worked in an apple evaporator that winter drying apples. The following year
they moved to Tonasket.
Life was not easy for Edgar and Pearl. He was a hard worker and spent
his
entire life trying to make a living and keep food on the table for his family.
Pearl loved her children and was a loyal mother. Edgar died in Selah,
Washington November 6, 1933, at the age of 70 1/2 yrs. Ernest was 21 years
old and living away from home. There were still 4 children at home. Jasper
was 19 years old, Ruth was 15 yrs old, Robert was 11 years old, and Francis
was 8 years old at the time of their father's death.
Harvey died of appendicitis at the age of 13, Robert was shot
by a friend in
a hunting accident at the age of 14 at Yakima in 1936. Maud was died in a
Yakima, Washington Hospital September 14, 1931. Francis was killed in the
Second World War before his 21st birthday on the Island of Luzon. Cloyed
Elwood had three sons. Maud had one son who died at four years of age.
Eugene had seven children, four lived to be adults. Ernest had four children.
His son, Larry, died at five years and three girls lived to be adults. Ruth
had two children who lived to be adults. Neither Nellie, nor her brother
Jasper had any children.
The only descendants of Edgar Elwood Still who
carry on the Still family name are Cloyed's sons; Art, Edgar, and Howard and
their descendants; plus Eugene's son Gerald and his two sons, Jeffery and
Bobby and their descendants. June 24, 1995, Barbara (Still) McKinney went
to the Yakima Library and looked up obituary records of Edgar, Robert, Maud,
and Frank. She also checked Yakima newspapers. All four individuals are
buried in Tahoma Cemetery at Yakima. Edgar is incorrectly listed with the
last name of Stile in the obituary. Maud is listed as Maud Bliss and also a
reference to her and Frank under Still next to Robert. Newspaper clippings
were found for all four. Marriage Notes: Edgar Elwood Still married Cloyed
