- BIRTH: 2 AUG 1868, Wolcott, CT
- DEATH: 14 SEP 1955, Rocky Hill, CT
Dad died in Rocky Hill at the little house they moved into after
leaving Wallingford where the properties got to the point where they
were too much for him to handle. They wanted to be nearer Mim in
Wethersfield and Peg in Newington. Dad finished mowing the small lawn
on Chapin Av. and went in to lie down, not feeling entirely well. He
never woke up from his nap
"Bobbie" stayed in that house, on her own, for many years before
moving to the Masonic Home and Hospital in Wallingford to live out her
years.
- EVENT: Living
1910-1946 (approximately), 215 So. Main Street Walfd. (res.)
A devoted horseman, Dad Lum often rode "Cherokee" out to East
Wallingford from the stable at Choate where he was kept. He bought
the five acres on top of Whirlwind Hill from "Old man Bartholomew"
after many inquiries and finally a shake of the hands. He had the
barn remodeled to include a stall and built the four room cottage on
top of the hill as a summer retreat where he could enjoy his horse,
garden and the cool breezes coming off the Sound.
This property was left to his daughter, Miriam after he had converted
it to year round for the purpose of renting it to Pete and Anne in
1950 at $45.00 per month. In 1956, after having moved to Simsbury for
a year or so as telephone manager in the West Hartford office, Pete
and Anne and family moved back to Whirlwind and bought the place from
Mim and Pop.
"Dad" was civic minded and was Treasurer of the Town of Wallingford
for years. He was a long time and faithful member of Compass Lodge
AF&AM, a 32nd degree Mason with an honorary 33rd degree and finally a
Knights Templar. We still have his dress sword.
He also was a member of the Governor's footguard and his engraved
sword for dress and formal occasions is to be handed down through the
family.
