Notes

Lawrence Erskine was the son of the Earl of Mar & Kellie, according to a
widely believed (but undocumented) story in the family. He later adapted
the surname Mar when he came to the New World. His father, the Earl,
according to the story, outlived him, dying at the age of 92. His older
brother died without heirs. Lawrence died when Jane (Hammond) Case
was about 3 or 4 years old.

After the Earl died, Mary Mar, Lawrence's daughter gave papers to her
brother Graham to go to Ireland to claim title. He was never seen or
heard from again. Next, James was sent. He stayed in the Old Country
for about a year, and returned flush with money.

The Earl of Mar in 1866 was John Francis Miller Erskine. In 1732, John,
Earl of Mar, was succeeded by daughter Lady Frances, who married a
cousin named Erskine.

Lottie was mother of three children, Louis William, Minnie and Isabelle but was unable to withstand the shock of losing her beloved and famous husband to an infection on the back of his neck and died within four years of his early demise. She had received a large reward or share in the "prize money" earned by the crew of the picket boat and left the children in the care of their Aunt and Uncle, we believe. Refer to the package of documents which detail the heroic Naval episode and the events before and following toward the end of the Civil War. In any event, Lottie arranged for a fine memorial monument to be erected in the family plot in Fishkill.
