Notes
Will Stotes Jr. was a hero as Second Asst. Engineer aboard a picket
boat in the Union Navy in 1864. Conditions were such that there was a
conscription effort for 500,000 recruits for the Army going on and the
war looked rather glamourous to a young man from upstate NY. Young
William went to Williamsburg in Brooklyn and got himself a commission
going immediately to sea with the Rambo of the Civil War, Lt. William
Cushing. There is a large file in the genealogy collection detailing
his exploits which resulted in the sinking of the Rebel Ram Albemarle
in the Roanoke River at Plymouth, NC. The ironclad had been raising
the devil with the blockade and Cushing devised a unique way to sink
the dreaded ship. The original documents including letters, news
stories, artifacts and pictures were donated to the War Memorial
Museum of Virginia for safe keeping by Pete Foster and can be found
there if the desire is great. In the meantime, the copies tell much
of the whole story.
