SILKEN FIX 2006
My first Silken fix for 2006 was the annual Rarities dog show in Sacramento.
It was wonderful to see my adoptive "Silken family members" again. I also had the pleasure
of seeing a few Silkens I'd never met before. These included Connor, Abby, Brewer, & baby Freya.
I also got to see 4 of Kyra & Strider's puppies, who had grown a lot since I saw them at 10 weeks of age
in December 2005! Perle is now Chanel, and Josephine is now Mika. The weather that weekend was crazy! There was rain, thunder, and winds gusty enough to uproot EZ-UP tents staked into the ground, in the process twisting them out of shape so that they ended up a mangled, useless mess. Although the covered patio at the
Red Lion Hotel provided shelter for the show rings, the canvas sides flapped so hard that they spooked
many of the dogs, especially puppies of all breeds. This show had a Tibetan Mastiff specialty,
so I finally got to see some in-person. The puppies look like adorable teddy bears!
Gilbert Seminar-June 24-25, 2006
The Gilbert K-9 Structure & Movement Seminar in Lafayette, California was incredible.
Admittedly, my favorite part was the hands-on evaluations of the dogs attendees brought on day
two. Since the seminar was hosted by the California Silken Windhound Club, most of the dogs were
Silken Windhounds, but there were also a few Whippets and one Borzoi. Again, I had the pleasure of meeting
a few Silkens I hadn't before including Dora & Rex of Rubia Silkens. The evaluations were very interesting!
I'd enjoy a whole day of watching nothing but the Gilberts evaluating various Silken Windhounds!
I brought my digital camera along and wound up taking over 200 photos! Books related to the seminar
were available for sale, which Ed Gilbert (the author) personally autographed. I highly recommend attending
the Gilberts' seminars to anyone interested in showing dogs/breeding dogs/dog performance sports or just
an avid dog nut like myself! I'd gladly attend another of their seminars in the future.
