Lt-The Schipperke

In Memory of our beloved Lt

In July of 2003, we lost our beloved Lt. He had cancer and just could not survive. Our hearts are broken. He was such a wonderful doggie and gave us over 11 years of joy!

Below is Lt's story

I'm Lt (for lieutenant) and my mom saved my life AND my 3 siblings. We were to be destroyed because our parents were brother and sister and our former owners thought we would be idiots. (Far from it--ask any of our new moms!!) Anyway, mom asked for a stay of execution for us while she located good homes. It took her all of 30 minutes to round up nearly 20 people who really wanted us. Then we got to choose. That was neat! I ran straight to mom and we haven't been separated since then!

Although I have the regular, annoying Schipperke bark, I also join in a good howl when I can hear the neighbor wolves singing. My speed and watchfulness are matched only by my courage. At 9 weeks of age, I cornered a rattlesnake in the yard and alerted everyone for miles around! (well, I didn't want mom to step on it and get bit--she can't move as fast as I can!) We are very highly regarded as guard dogs, and were originally bred as ratters in Belgium.

I learn anything that I feel is necessary or beneficial to me (gets me cookies) but I am a great escape artist, and am totally deaf when running away. I DO know to return home immediately, however, if a gun is fired. (I'm not stupid-- you never make anyone with a gun angry!)

I've heard people say I'm a handsome and congenial gentleman, and it is fun to cuddle on the couch and watch the dog shows. My mom says I'm the "love of her life" and that's a pretty good thing to be!!

Is it a BEAR??? No, it's ME, Lt!!

Lt and several friends! A Birthday bash!

A LITTLE BLACK DOG
By Elizabeth Gardner Reynolds..dated October, 1943...

I wonder if Christ had a little black dog
All curly and wooly like mine,
With two silky ears and a nose round and wet
and two eyes brown and tender that shine.

I'm sure if He had, that that little black dog
knew right from the first He was God;
That he needed no proof that Christ was divine
But just worshipped the ground that He trod.

I'm afraid that He hadn't, because I have read
how He prayed in the garden alone,
For all of His friends and disciples had fled
even Peter, the one called a stone.

And oh! I am sure that that little black dog,
with a heart so tender and warm,
Would never have left Him to suffer alone
but creeping right under His arm

Would have licked those dear fingers in agony clasped
and counting all favors but loss,
When they took Him away would have trotted behind,
and followed Him quite to the cross.
