Hanukkah

Since Hanukkah is the Festival of Lights, I have decided to dedicate the lights of Hanukkah to people who have added light to my life. Each night will be dedicated to a different person or people.

November 30, 2002 -- The Second Night of Hanukkah

menorah with two candles lit Blessed are You, O Lord, our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments and has commanded us to kindle the Hanukkah light.

Blessed are You, O Lord, our God, King of the universe, who wrought miracles for our forefathers, in those days at this season.

Playing in the background is "Ma Oz Tsur", traditionally sung after lighting the Hanukkah candles.

The second light of Hanukkah I dedicate to my daughter, Shira. Shira was born just a few days after Hanukkah in 1991. I guess you could say that she was my Hanukkah present.

Shira was born during a very rough time in our lives, as we were dealing with Avi's father's terminal cancer. At the time, we had no place to live (our apartment was being built), so we were staying with Avi's parents. Shira brought so much happiness into that depressing winter. She helped us to celebrate the glory of life while death was staring us in the face.

Shira was (and continues to be) our teacher. She taught us about dirty diapers and ear infections. She also taught us about first smiles, first steps and first words. Through our love for Shira, our love for each other grew.

Shira, you are beautiful and smart and funny. I admire your stubbornness and your desire to always know more. Thank you for adding the light of love to our lives.
