Andrew Whiteing was born in 1844 in Kingston upon Hull, England in a region of the old Yorkshire County (since divided) now known as East Riding Yorkshire (ERY). He was the second son of lawyer George and Alice (Beecroft) Whiteing, both of nearby Beverley. George eventually became the post master of Beverley, Andrew's cousin George Whiteing, also a lawyer, became the mayor of Beverley, which can cause a bit of confusion when researching this line. From a long line of "Yeomen" (persons who farmed their own land) Andrew came by his interest in horticulture and stock raising quite honestly and at an early age. While his older brother, Beecroft, would go to sea and become a Master Mariner, Andrew acquired practical knowledge on farming under the tutorship of a local "Yeoman" named James Clark. It was during this time that we believe he first met Mr. Clark's step-granddaughter... Sarah Jane North. Sarah Jane and her older brother, John Foster North, had lost their mother, Hannah (Foster) North, at a very tender age. Their father, Thomas Henry North (son of "Gentleman" Thomas Curtis North) had remarried later the following year to Anna Elizabeth Clark. Anna then raised the two children along with the eight children she would eventually have with Thomas. Andrew would cross the ocean to America twice before settling there. His first trip was in 1869, and the second one in 1870, this time accompanied by Thomas and Anna (Clark) North, their 8 children and his beloved Sarah Jane. The group left England out of the port city of Liverpool aboard the steamship "Mavarian" bound for Portland, a two week voyage. After an overnight stay in Portland, they boarded a train for Clinton County, in eastern Iowa, arriving after two or three days in "the spring of the year". Sarah Jane and Andrew were married there the following spring of 1871 in St. John's Church. Their union would produce nine children and last over sixty-one years until Andrew's death in 1932. The group stayed in the Eden Township area of Clinton Co. only a few years after Anna (Clark) North died the summer of 1872. The group joined others of the area in moving onward to Crawford Co. in western Iowa. Although Sarah Jane and Andrew eventually went onto California in 1909 with most of their youngest children, their older grown children remained in the mid-west, along with most of their mother's many half-siblings and their families in Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota. Today their decendants can still be found in both the mid-west and along the west coast. To view the lists of desendants for their family Tree of Whiteing and or North just click HERE.
