Thanks to Bill Polk, we now have a family for Lilly. The information is derived from a will in which Lilly, her siblings and mother are listed as beneficiaries. Bill has more POLK information at his POLK web site.
The following was addressed to Eliza (Falkner) GRACE from Thomas POLK. It was transcribed exactly as written with a font (Quill) as close to the original script as possible. (If your system does not support the font chosen, it may appear as VERY large default font.) For ease in reading, some spaces were added where punctuation was lacking. An area with underline only indicates that the text was not legible. (Paper had been folded -- quite a bit of deterioration during the past 140 plus years.)
State of N.C. A. County July the 23rd 1858
Dear Sister in Christ
you no dout have looked for a letter from me until you have given out on getting one but when you hear of my excuse I hope you will excuse me first shortly after I received your verry interesting letter my mother died she died the 26th of May verry sudenly and verry easy She went off ____she was a sl___ and ___ Since then Farther has been in bad health he had a place to come on his breast and it has been as large as a common biscuit it has been running for the last four weeks and I would not be surprised if it was a running sore as long as he lived also our baby was taken sick in about two weeks after Mother died and with the flux and was sick three weeks and he died and the week before he died Leonidas brought his wife down to see us and it was labor shortly after she got here and had a fine daughter and soon after was taken with severre fitts for evvry half hour which lasted two nites and a day She did not leave until four weeks had elapsed She is nearly well now and this leaves us all well at this time hoping it may find you enjoying the same blessing people are genrally well in this neighbourhood we have fine crops our cotton crops are a great deal better than common Corn is verry good except on the slanty land Marshal said when he got back that if we had have had the rain that you had our crops would have been as good he don't seem to like your country so well as we expected he is satisfied here also Mr Sturdivant he got home about a week ago and is satisfied to stay here or at least he says he asks more for his land now than when he left you no dout think I never will visit your country but you are mistakin I should have been there before if it had not been for sickness and for the want of money I intend to visit you all as soone as I can as for James he dont care whether I visit him or not I sent a letter to him by Marshal and he has not answered it yet nor was news sent me any word by Marshal it is strange so much so I cannot account for it he certainly has hearn (heard) some story I think hard of him for such coolness if I was to visit your country I would not no whether to go to see him or not until I first learnt that he was not mad please give him my best respects and tell him I would have writen to him before now if he had have answered my letter or sent me some word by Marshal also all of my old friends from Anson if any ask to when I will visit your country I no not at this time but as soon as I can. Aunt Sarah and family are all well and has a verry good crop. our ___tracted Meeting commences on Thursday before the third Sabath in August and will you assist us in your prayers for the out pooring of Gods heavenly Graces uppon us one time more O that he would meet with us and refresh our drooping spirits one time more and with us you and family although you are in a distant land he is evvry where present and at that time I hope you and your dear family will enjoy his smiles Lillitha sends you her best respects and says you must not forsake her as you are the only one that will rite to her
