Working Years
My career started from a very humble beginning. My first job was as a F/B cashier at the Orchard Sun Hotel in Penang. Yup, nothing grand at all. Just a normal job. Every working day, I changed in the bowels of the hotel with sewage water dripping from the pipes above. When I opened my cabinet, cockroaches scurried here and there for cover. The meals provided by the hotel were usually made from leftover food from the hotel guests. My salary was only RM350 per month. A pitiful amount. But, it was honest money.
Later, I became a reporter with The Star, our local daily. The newsroom was always filled with cigarette smoke. I went home everyday stinking of cigarette smoke. To a non-smoker, it was extremely uncomfortable. But, I managed to learn quite a few things there. And I got to do what I love - write.
I was lucky enough to join an international publication as a freelance writer. That was my dream - to be an international writer. I achieved that by the time I was 22 years old. Unfortunately, the dream didn't last long. During the bad years, they let me go.
