PHANTASM III: LORD OF THE DEAD

It seems like just about every horror movie series will eventually produce a sequel that tries to be a comedy. It happened with Evil Dead. It happened with Nightmare on Elm Street, and now the Phantasm series follows suit with its third offering. The first two Phantasm movies were mostly serious movies with a little bit of comic relief, but this one goes out of its way to be humorous. There is nothing wrong with mixing humor and horror, as "Night of the Demons II", "Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn", and "Dead Alive" have all proven. However, some of the comedy in "Phantasm III" is misconceived. Such misfired attempts at comedy include Rocky trying to stop a sphere with her bare hands right after it snapped her nunchucks in half (that's not very funny, that's ridiculous). As if that is not enough, Tim the 10-year old commando is doing things which are completely implausible such as shooting a bouncing sphere (about the size of a softball) three or four consecutive times with pinpoint accuracy! Despite its ludricrous elements, "Phantasm III" is still a decent movie with some great scenes, such as the Tall Man performing some brain surgery on Mike. Overall, it ranks about average, but it is outlandish and you would be hard-pressed to find anything like it.
