Sunday, Feb 28 1999 I just found a link to a Clay Pigeons' Press Conference. You wont find there any quote of Joaquin, but there is a pic of him, and he is just mentioned at the beginning: Press conferences are very controlled and organized. Everyone involved in a film has a designated seat at the front table. Vince Vaughn and Joaquin Phoenix were out of order when they shuffled in, so they mixed up the seating arrangement. They both looked like they might have been up all night. Vince removed a crisp, new pack of cigarettes from his jacket. He gave a smoke to Joaquin, then the press conference began. Saturday, Feb 27 1999 8mm Joaquin Phoenix is gloriously weird and kinky as Welles's sometime assistant and Virgil-like guide through the hellish S & M world. Phoenixs louche, quipping performance brings a welcome touch of humor to the picture. Joaquin Phoenix is giving the movie's only lively performance. Only Joaquin Phoenix as the streetwise Max, who introduces Welles to the squalor and horror of the porno underground, shows any flashes of character and humor. But, again, it is not enough to compensate for the film's malaise. Joaquin rocks. Hes a breath of fresh air and adds a sense of authenticity to this otherwise turgid waste of millions and millions of dollars. Thursday, Feb 25 1999 Sunday, Feb 21 1999 I've seen many different cuts of THE YARDS, and each one has been better than the last. It is on its way to becoming a masterpiece. James Gray is a perfectionist. Heaven forbid that anyone should attempt to be a "serious filmmaker." Heaven forbid a director look up to The Godfather. Maybe everybody should try to make the Waterboy. (If netherworld knew anything about the Yards, he'd realize it bares very little narrative or even aesthetic similarity to the Godfather...except maybe its beautiful, moody lighting.) The movie is a serious work of art, attempting -- and achieving -- emotional levels rarely seem in films, especially American films. The acting will blow you away. (Charlize Theron, almost unrecognizable in black hair and heavy eyeliner, is the biggest revelation.) Caan, Dunaway, and Burstyn haven't been this strong since the 70's, and Wahlberg and Phoenix give by far their strongest performances. Maybe netherworld would rather see Dunaway doing a sequel to Dunsten Checks In. Thanks. Or do you want to know more about Gladiator? Then take a look at those pages: upcoming movies, The Russell Crowe Trivia page or Movie Salvage where you will already find some pics from the opening battle scenes Saturday, Feb 20 1999 ....
