AUGUST 1999

Hi we're back! Hope you all had a cosy bunkered-down-in-front-of-a-warm-fire kind of July. Needless to say Fourplay blew them all away OS and if you'd like to know more about what Lara actually got up to over there check out the Fourplay Website. As promised we have some new songs in the pipeline which we'll be showcasing at our 'Welcome Back Lara!' gig on Tuesday 24th at the Harbourside Brasserie. Also on the bill will be fantastic all female harmony group Sister Madly so try not to miss this one! And we should add that for all you closet, or maybe not, Fleetwood Mac fans out there, we'll be performing You Make Loving Fun this Friday 13 and Saturday 14 at the Harbourside Brasserie. These tribute nights are always HUGE so book early! Hope to see you soon. J&L

JUNE 1999

NEWS FLASH! There have been reported sightings of Lara in London and Paris of late and she appears to be having a good time. It may be due to the fact that Fourplay have successfully commenced world domination. Meanwhile, back home Joy's been chewing at the bit to play and now has her chance when she performs in solo mode Thursday 24th at the 3 Weeds, Rozelle. She'll be playing lots of J&L faves plus some not so familiar tunes and will be supporting the highly talented and entertaining Penelope Swales. Hope you can come along and share in this special evening of acoustic femme power...

Lara headed off to the UK on the 26th May so there'll sadly be no more J & L shows for a few months...The good news though is that the new record's coming along nicely and Joy always writes lots of songs when Lara's out of the country so we'll have lots of new stuff for you all when we start up again. In the meantime have fun and hope to see you all again in August! Love, J&L

MAY 1999

Sunday 16th
Club Acoustica, Excelsior Hotel, Surry Hills
7pm?

Our first time at Club Acoustica which has just moved from its La Fabulosa residency to the Excelsior and is by all accounts growing at an exponential rate. Come and lend your support to people who are putting much needed time and expertise into supporting local acoustic acts and working to create a thriving acoustic scene. And it's all for free!

Saturday 22nd
Sea Horse Inn, Eden
7pm? Dinner show

Our first time to Eden - we've heard great reports about the place and the happening music scene down south in general so we're thrilled to be finally getting a chance to play there.

APRIL 1999

Hi there! Great news just through - ABC radio have decided to playlist Papa Luigi's from our CD! This means that from May it'll be on 2BL plus its equivalent in each city as well as all the regional stations. The other big news this month is that we're going back into the studio to start recording our second CD. It probably won't actually be ready until Xmas because we'll have to record it in instalments throughout the year, but at least we'll have made a start. And for those who are a little bit sick of seeing the same photos of us for the last year, you'll be pleased to know that there's also a new photo shoot in the works...so, lots of behind the scenes stuff happening this month. But we do have at least one gig and also a live to air on Radio National coming up.

Manday 12th
Radio National, Late Night Live with Phillip Adams
10.30pm

A great programme and excellent opportunity for some Australia-wide exposure for us. I think we'll be chatting plus playing a few songs - let us know if you have any particular requests and we'll try to accommodate...

Hail, Rock & Roll
Monday 26th
Hopetoun Hotel, Surry Hills
9pm?

Supporting Raoul Graf and the Infidels - this gig was originally scheduled for the 14th, which turned out to be the night of the Great Hail Storm, so we're going to try our luck again.

And coming up on May 2nd we've got a big double-bill headline show at the 3 Weeds with wonderful acoustic singer/songwriter Peggy Van Zalm who we performed with recently at Port Fairy. She's from Perth too so lets face it, she's got automatic cred! And opening the night will be The Tenant (aka Jason Rooke), latest JJJ Unearthed winner, whose hit song "You Shit Me To Tears" (titles don't come much better than that) is being featured heavily on the Js at the moment. We've also updated our Other Links page a bit so you might want to check it out...

MARCH 1999

Unfortunately this is a bit late but we've been busy! The festivals were FANTASTIC - met lots of lovely people, did great gigs, sold out of CDs - what more could we ask for? We'll be back at the Basement, Tues 9th and 3Weeds, Wed 10th with Jackie Leven, then at the Excelsior at midnight on Sat 13th and 27th so hope you can make it along to one of them...

Also, last minute gig just in - we'll be at the Wollongong Uni campus for the first time on Wednesday 24th at 12 noon for a 45 minute set.

FEBRUARY 1999

For all the Doug Mulray fans out there make sure you tune in to his show on 2WS at 5.30pm this Wednesday 17th as we'll be chatting to the man himself and playing a couple of tunes. Alternatively if you're one of the lucky ones with Power PCs or Macs and the latest software you can choose to watch us live on the Net instead!

Saturday 6th and Friday 19th
Excelsior Hotel, Surry Hills
Midnight

A rare chance to hear us workshopping (could be euphemism for making mistakes...) new songs.

Sunday 21st
Hopetoun Hotel, Surry Hills

Wednesday, 24th
The College of Fine Arts, Paddington

Our first gig at this campus - it's on the corner of Green and Napier Sts Paddington and we'll be playing outdoors somewhere near the Student Union building.

The Metro
8pm?

Should be a huge night as we're supporting Jackie Leven, back out here on tour again after last year's success. Headlining is Altan, currently Ireland's biggest traditional act who are touring here for the first time.

Friday 26th to Sunday 28th
The Blue Mountains Folk Festival
tba

An all weekend extravaganza... the programme is still to be announced but hopefully we'll get to play at the gorgeous Clarendon again. There's a great lineup this year with international guests including leaders of the English folk movement Martin Carthy, Norma Waterson and their daughter (and fabulous fiddler) Eliza. Jackie Leven and Altan will also be there, and other local acts include the Gadflys who will be familiar to Good News Week Watchers.

And the dates are:

Frid 26, 8.00pm Katoomba Public School - opening ceremony
Sat 27, 1.30pm The Clarendon Hotel - one of our fave venues!
Sat 27, 4.00pm The Festival Room - just up the road...
Sun 28, 3.30pm Katoomba Public School - women's concert

...coming up in early March we're off to Melbourne and Port Fairy then racing back to Sydney for two more shows with the wonderful Jackie Leven at the Basement on the 9th and The Three Weeds on the 10th. Hope to see you all soon...

JANUARY 1999

18/1/99: Unfortunately our only shows for this month at the Hopetoun were cancelled due to a misunderstanding. Our apologies to anyone who turned up unwittingly on those dates. We hope to see you all back there in March.

On a brighter note, we have what appears to be an exciting year ahead. Our entree into the folk festival circuit begins at the end of Feb with the Blue Mountains Folk Festival, then on to Port Fairy , Victoria in early March, with the possibility of a Melbourne show en route, then a couple of Sydney shows at the Basement and 3 Weeds supporting Jackie Leven again. We also hope to make a return trip to Perth in April and are planning a UK sojourn for July/August.

Have a wonderful '99 and hope to see you all soon, J & L
