Inniskeen V Knockbride

Date: February 18th 2001

Time: 1 PM

Venue: Monaghan Harps

Round: Quarter Final

Result: Inniskeen 0-10 Knockbride 0-8

Man of the Match: Fergal Duffy (Inniskeen)

Inniskeen opened the scoring with two points in the opening two minutes from Eoin Meegan and Gary Lynch.  Meegan's came from a well struck free while Lynch took his from play.

Inniskeen continued to dominate but poor finishing was to see them squander chances and allow the visitors come back into the game.  By the end of the first quarter it was level pegging with Knockbride taking their opening point in the 14th minute and Peter Reilly equalising a minute later.

It was left to Eoin Meegan to put his side back in front in the 16th minute when he sent over from a free for a foul on Martin Callan.  But it was all square within a minute as John Tierney did likewise for the Cavan men.  Then in the 20thth minute Knockbride took the lead when Tierney once more delivered from a well taken free and Inniskeen were now under some pressure.

But by the 21st minute of the game that pressure was relieved somewhat when corner forward Alan Ryan delivered a fine score when he accurately sent over the bar to put the sides level once more.

It was in the last ten minutes of the first half that Inniskeen began to capitalise on the play they were making, hanging some nice moves together and pulling out all the stops as they worked hard to gain the advantage.  When Eoin Meegan put them back in front with a point from a well taken free that was the life they needed and two more points were to follow before the break.  Jordan Meegan took the first of these in the 26th minute and it was he who delivered the other score to open up a three point gap coming into the interval.  When the half time whistle sounded the score stood: Inniskeen 0-7 Knockbride 0-4.

Inniskeen seemed well set for victory going into the second half.  But things began to unravel when Knockbride's Dara Smyth took the opening score of the second period.  Inniskeen began to loose their shape and looked less organised.  But then their break came in the 12th minute when in a fine attack they broke through and with only the keeper to beat, the ball was blasted wide.  The frustration that entered the Inniskeen game became palpable when some reckless finishing followed.  By the beginning of the last quarter only a point divided the sides as Knockbride's Peter Reilly sent over a fine free.

The pressure was now on the home side and there was a might sigh of relief when Fergal McSkane took a good point in the 23rd minute to extend Inniskeen's lead to two points.  But within a minute that lead was cut to a single point as John Tierney sent over once more.

With four minutes to go, it was helter-skelter as both sides made every effort to take control of this game.  Then Inniskeen's Fergal McSkane once more delivered a most valuable score when again under pressure sent over.  But yet again Peter Reilly responded with a free kick and once again only a point stood between the sides and just a couple of minutes to go.  While the pace continued to quicken, Inniskeen held their nerve and in a fine patch of play, reasserted their control.  Two minutes into added on time, they were rewarded with a point from Eoin Meegan which brought relief to the Inniskeen camp.

The pressure continued to mount right up until the last kick of the game.  Knockbride were awarded a close free with seconds to go and they had to go for goal to pull the game out of the fire and snatch a famous victory from the jaws of defeat.  But it was not to be.  Inniskeen held firm and the shot was saved.  With the save came the long whistle and the Grattans were through to the next stage of the competition on a final score of Inniskeen 0-10 Knockbride 0-8.
