Soo Line Railroad | This page contains links to the Soo Line Historical and Technical Society, and to many other sites of interest to the Soo Line railfan or modeler. It also has links to my pictures taken on excursions behind restored Soo Line Steam locomotives and at other SLH&TS events. |
National Railway Historical Society | This page contains links to the NHRS's home on the web, as well as to some of their regional and local groups. It also includes some links to Railroad History. |
Major Resources | This somewhat arbitrary listing includes some great sites that are acknowledged by members of the railfan community to be exceptionally helpful to railroad fans and modelers alike. |
Personal Sites | Many railfans have constructed their own presence on the web to highlight their special areas of interest. This list is organized alphabetically by the last name of the railfan/webmaster. |
Freight Roads | These are the predominant railroads in North America today. There is also a set of links related to the use of Scanners to listen to railroad traffic, and some to the proposed merger of Conrail into the Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation. |
Passenger Service | Although AmTrak and VIA are the main passenger carriers in North America today, there are a number of others that provide limited, more regional services. You will also find links to some sites set up by devotees of Handcars, by hobos, and even places to rent a train car. |
Tourist Roads | All across the country (and world), there are small enclaves of dedicated craftsmen who restore and operate these tourist railroads. |
Narrow Gauge Roads | Some of the most-loved tourist operations in the US are these slim-gauge roads. Running smaller than standard equipment, on track laid to (usually) 36 inches between the railheads, these roads are able to turn tighter and often operate over more rugged country than does standard guage equipment. |
Museums / Restoration | Links to some of the many railroad museums around the country, as well as links to sites dedicated to Steam Locomotive Restoration projects. There are links to some Railroad Technical and Historical Societies, as well as the very complete List from Model Railroader Magazine. |
Rail Sites outside North America | Many railfans outside the North American continent have established sites to showcase railroads in the rest of the world. Here are some I have found. |
Railroad Pictures and Stories | These sites are primarily dedicated to presenting pictures and stories of the railroads. |
Commercial Ventures | The Web is now a place where businesses can advertise and reasonable expect a return on their investment. Many railroadiana business are represented. |
Transcontinental Railroads | A timeline history of the Transcontinental Railroads across North America. Beginning with the Union Pacific-Central Pacific race which met at Promontory Point May 10, 1869, future timelines will include the Southern Pacific, the Northern Pacific, the Great Northern, the Atchison, Topeka and Sante Fe, and the Canadian Pacific. You might also be interested in my 100-year timeline of the Soo Line Railroad |
Railroad Modeling | |
National Model Railway Association | This page contains links to the NMRA's main site, and to some other associated model clubs and societies . |
Major Resources | This somewhat arbitrary listing includes sites that are acknowledged by members of the modeling community to be exceptionally helpful to modelers and railroad fans. It also includes Usenet News and FAQ links, and some Decal manufacturers and how-to information. |
Personal Sites | Many railroad modelers have constructed their own "home on the web" to highlight their special areas of interest and expertise. This list is organized alphabetically by the last name of the modeler/webmaster. |
Clubs | Modeling is a social kind of pasttime for many modelers, and there have been a lot of clubs organized to fill that need. Here's a few of them |
Live Steam | This page contains links to those ambitious modelers who work in the medium of the original motive power. No wimpy electric motors for these guys! |
Commercial Sites | This page contains links to folks who provide a wide variety of parts and services to the railroad modeling communities. |
Rail-Mail | Check this out! You can rent ($15.00 per year, $25 for two years) a virtual e-mail address with a railroad-related ISP address. E-mail sent to this virtual address is forwarded to your own ISP for retrieval. Advantage: you can change your ISP and not have to change your published e-mail address. |
