I'd like to refer you to a webpage. A Louisiana woman named Elizabeth Fisher wished to purchase a Honda van. She is super sized, and found to her dismay, that though she was more than willing to pay for the van, Honda refused to make seat extenders available upon request. Honda's position is that they will make their vehicles "less safe", though all other automobile manufacturers supply seat belt extenders upon request either free of charge or for a nominal fee. They have told Elizabeth that their position is that they do not offer seat belt extenders, and that nothing she can do will change their minds.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, "the Mahatma", once said, "In a gentle way, you can shake the world". Elizabeth has started a campaign to let Honda see that people come in more than one size range, and that they have needs that they would like to see met. No-one is asking for a handout here. She is more than willing to pay for seat belt extenders so that the vehicle she wants will be safe and she will be able to comply with Louisiana's seat belt law.
What we are asking that you do is this: Look at Elizabeth's webpage, and make up your own mind about the situation. If you feel that you would like to add your voice to those of the people who have already spoken up in protest regarding Honda's position, there are addresses and links there for people to contact Honda with their views and opinions.
Now, I know that many people feel this way -- that the best way to hurt Honda is to NOT buy the vehicle from them. But this isn't about hurting. Elizabeth researched vehicles, and feels that the Honda van is the best choice for her. It would be easiest, of course, to find someone else who will accommodate her needs -- but, in the face of everything size acceptance is about, is it the best thing to do? If we put our heads down and slink away when someone says "no" when we ask for a product, we aren't doing ourselves or any other person of size a favor, nor are we educating the public, which includes merchants and manufacturers, to the fact that large people are a commanding portion of the consumer base! We DO exist, we DO have money, and we ARE consumers. And we shouldn't be ignored.
It isn't easy being different. But so many people ARE different! That's what movements like Size Acceptance are all about.
So take a look at Elizabeth's page.
Then do what YOU think is right!
