Size acceptance is now a veritable presence on the Net, and there are hundreds (if not thousands) of sites out there. I have linked to a number of sites that I consider vital. For instance, the Size Wise site has literally thousands of links to products, services, groups, doctors and more. It would be redundant to repeat their work here.
So here are some great "jumping off points"!
Resources
These are sites which have great information about all facets of size acceptance, as well as many useful links.
Size Wise -- the mama of them all, in my opinion, a mega-site. A companion site to the book of the same name. Lots of links, information, stories.
NAAFA -- homesite for the organization. Again, lots of links, information, pamphlets you can order, books, locations of meetings, etc.
ISAA -- homesite for the International Size Acceptance Association. Links, information, etc.
Size Acceptance Australia -- organization working to end size prejudice in Australia.
SeaFATtle Home Page -- SeaFATtle Home Page, for Seattle based size acceptance organization. This is an "in your face" organization that peppers its activism with humor. Fun site.
BBW/BHM/FA Organization -- this is a search engine for size acceptance topics.
Grandstyle Women's Club -- online resource "club" for large women. Fun, and a lot of excellent information and links.
The Body Shop -- It was a pleasure to find a "beauty" company that admits that moisturizers will not make you look younger! This is a great site, for a great company. They advocate taking care of your hair and skin, sell makeup and beauty products that are not tested on animals and environment friendly, and they have Real Ruby, a fat Barbie type doll! Additionally, Ruby seems to have aged on posters at the Body Shops here in Australia. A "don't miss" site.
Magazines
Radiance -- my favorite magazine for larger women, though men like reading at least some of the stories too! Fresh and savvy, nice viewpoint. The site has back issues online as well as selections from the current issue.
Dimensions -- for fat women and their admirers -- online companion to the magazine, with ancillary services. Focusing on many issues, including sexuality, romance, fashion and activism. Has personals service.
Fat!So? -- in your face publication, with a great online e-zine! Lots of stories, lots of links and lots of fun, with interactive features!
BBW Magazine -- presently out in its new form! Fifteen years ago, this was the ONLY magazine for larger women! I wish it had been around thirty years ago! Recently has undergone revamping, as Flynt Publications decided to stop producing it. Glad it's still here!
Mode Magazine -- published by Vogue, a magazine aimed at plus size women. They do not at this time target supersized women, and tend to use models who are of the smaller plus sizes, but it's a step in the right direction!
Clothing, Etc.
Large sized clothing sources are turning up on the Web daily. Try the Size Wise links to clothing websites, or check my coming Clothing Links page, hopefully up soon.
For the Home Sewer
Lots of larger women sew a goodly portion if not all of their wardrobes. There are dozens of excellent sites on the Internet offering large sized patterns, some of them in sizes up to 7x! I've listed a few of my favorites here.
Park Bench Patterns -- Though some of the Park Bench patterns are sold via the Full and Sassy Pattern Boutique site, this site is also worth a look. These patterns are made to be altered to any size, and are beautiful. They are specially designed to be adaptable to many fabrics and looks.
Beautiful Babes -- this webpage has been down recently, due to health problems, but is supposed to be back up in the fall (spring for those of us Down Under!). It's definitely worth keeping an eye out for -- lots of simple but stunning designs. Many of them are basic enough for a novice sewer, but the lines and forms are so sophisticated that they could be easily used again and again with all sorts of variations by the advanced sewer. A great place to start out that young sewer with fit problems.
Big Kids!
So many of us tell the same stories -- being ostracized and tormented by other children while were were small, because of our size. Being dieted by parents and doctors. How to deal with a large sized child, so that at least some of the pain can be avoided? There are resources out there, and I would strongly urge any parent of a large child to look into everything they can find.
Sizewise Kids -- Great resources for parents and children, including links to pen pal groups, magazines, and more.
Radiance Magazine's Kid's Project -- This project is aimed at not only educating kids at the school level on size acceptance, but also to give children a voice. They are calling for articles written BY kids, about what it is to be a fat kid, how they feel, what they like. The perfect opportunity for a kid to be heard, and to hear about other kids like them. Sometimes it helps not to feel alone! Highly recommended.
Personal Pages
As the size acceptance movement continues to grow, more and more people are putting up personal webpages about their own outlooks and experiences. I'm listing a few of these here, and invite you to email me with links to more!
Jensen's Place -- fun and beautiful website of an upbeat and attractive BBW. She has some excellent links, and the graphics are stunning. More than worth a look!
Dimensions' Personal Webpage Links -- list of links to personal webpages.
