This is the big day! It's time to explore the park. Today we plan
to go to Lata Berkoh in the morning. At 9am we went to Ombak floating
restaurant to look for tour packages to Lata Berkoh. We are not so lucky today because
trip to Lata Berkoh organized by them were already full. The package cost RM45 plus lunch
per person. Sham, the Ombak floating restaurant guy that greeted us yesterday told us that
we can hire a boat from the Wildlife Department. He suggested that we join their rubber
tubing in the afternoon. Hmm.... might be fun cause we don't have any plans for the
afternoon. So we are off to the park headquarter to look for a boat. The park headquarter will
arrange a boat for you to go to any where you like. They will record where you are going.
Boats to Lata Berkoh with 2 operators cost RM80. The boat can carry 4 persons in it.
It's much cheaper if you can find people to share the boat with you. It take 20 minutes to
reach Lata Berkoh cascade waterfall, which is a beautiful picnic spot.
The boat ride along
Tahan river was so amazing. The river bank is cover with green canopy. It's so peaceful
here. I like putting my hand into the cool rushing fresh water. Tahan river is different
from Tembeling river. It's quite shallow with rocks and pebbles. The water is so icy cold
because it flows directly from the Tahan Mountain. The water is black in colour, red in
some places. This is due to the colours of the rocks at the bottom of the river.
I can't stop myself
from taking photographs of the scenery. It's so beautiful. It's also a great place for
fishing.
The boat stop some
where, then we have to continue by foot. It's about 700 meters along the jungle
trail to the cascade waterfall. It took us 15 minutes to reach there. If it's raining in
the mountain area, the water level can raise up to the trail area! Must be a great river.
There were already many people when we reach the waterfall. The current is very strong. I
can't swim very well so I stay near to the bank, but I can feel the current pulling me
away! There are many beautiful green and yellow butterflies flying around. They seems to
be licking the wet rock surface.
We spent 2 hours there
and it's time to go back. The journey back is fun too. You got to pay the boatman when you
get back to Kuala Tahan and they will give you a receipt.
At about 1.30pm, we
already back to our room. As I was eating my tuna sandwiches outside our room, I was
approached by a dark, really dark guy name Hassan. We started chit chat and he asked me
whether I want to join him and his friends for rubber tubing up the
Tembeling river for RM20 per person. I should have said no because he is a stranger, but
some how I agreed with him. Maybe it's because his 2 other friends look like a decent
person and they are "uncle-uncle" already, besides one of them is a
Chinese guy, so I thought it would be safe to join them. Another guy, a licensed tour
guide name Man also join in. So at 3pm the 6 of us, me, Ah Lin, Hassan, Ah Keong (the
Chinese guy), Halim and Man off to do rubber tubing. Only 5 person went in the water,
while Halim driving the boat.
We wear life jacket,
this is a must even though you know how to swim. You sit yourself into a big rubber tire
tube and let yourself flow down stream through the rapids. You used your hand to paddle
and control the direction your going. Sometimes it hard to control it. Man is taking care
of Ah Lin and Ah Keong while Hassan with me. Hassan seems to attached to me too much, I
can't get him off me! Jerk! But nothing happen, he just afraid that I might drown or
something, so he stay very close to me. The fun part begin when you when through the
rapids. Wow....... big wave coming!
When all that is over,
it's time to get into the boat and head back to Kuala Tahan. Then a funny thing happen,
they found out that both of us are Chinese and they can't believe their eyes, because we
both looks like Malay girl! Ah Keong was so surprise and happy to know that we are Chinese
so that he can speak mandarin with us, he had tough time converse in Malay with the rest
of the gang I guess. Later I found out that there's only a few Chinese population in Kuala
Tahan. That night, he invited us to join him for dinner at Lia's restaurant which is run
by Man. We also found out that Man is a Chinese Muslim. Encik Halim and Encik Satar
(another friend of Uncle Ah Keong I met during dinner) both are Wildlife Department
officers. We also met Ah Seong, Man's nephew who also the restaurant main chef. While
Uncle Ah Keong is a businessman and he is here to built a chalet, it's a join venture
project with Encik Satar and Encik Halim. He's been here for one week now and is going
back the next day.
That night we have a
lot to talk about. Everybody was so curious to find out who are we. It's a small village
and everybody knows everybody, and I think everybody knows that we are Chinese girl that
looks like Malay girl already by that time. After dinner we join them to a night
safari ride in a Ford Ranger pick up truck into the oil palm plantation nearby.
Usually it cost RM25 per person for a ride, however Ah Keong knew the truck driver (opps..
I forgot his name) and he is willing to take all of us for a ride for free. So kind of him
:) Before going into the plantation, we stop by a logging quarters, they are going to pick
up some beers. Both of us should not be in this place! I must be crazy to follow a bunch
of guys into the jungle at night! Mum's gonna kill me when she finds out about this!
The truck has a very
powerful spotlight. We are trying to look for creatures that come out to find their food
at night. The chance to see animals at night depends on your luck, the bright lights will
temporary blinds them and stop them from moving for a while. That night we saw a civet
cat, a mongoose and a bird sleeping on the leafs of the oil palm tree. Oh yeah... and a
herd of water buffaloes. It's almost midnight when we head back to Kuala Tahan. We are not
so lucky that night, not much to see but I had a wonderful time, great experience.
