Day 3 (16/4/2001)
taman25.jpg (23320 bytes)This is the last day for us to explore the park, we are going back tomorrow. Gosh...! I just hope I can stay a few days more. We plan to venture into the park by ourselves without a guide. You can do so if you are sure what you are doing. At first I am scared to go into the jungle cause it looks so quite and there's no people around it. Guess I have been living in the city for too long, I get scared of places with no people around. Ok I admit it, I'm an urban freak! Some how Ah Keong change his mind and he is not going back today. He is going to join us hiking to Bukit Terisek and later to the canopy walk. That's good news, I am glad he is accompany us. However Encik Halim is working today, it's Monday so he won't be going with us.

At 9am, we are off to Bukit Terisek. The jungle trail up the hill was hard for me, I had to stop a few times to catch my breath. Hahaha.... I must be getting old now! Ah Lin and Ah Keong are doing fine, they move faster then me. We met up with other hikers with their guides along the way to the peak. Ah Keong seems to know all the local guides here and started chit chat with them. After a few struggles and hard work, I reach the top of the hill finally! You can see Tahan Mountain from here. What a beautiful scenery. It's also first time for Ah Keong to reach the top although he had live in Kuala Tahan for 12 years. An achievement for all of us.

taman22.jpg (29089 bytes)Next we head to the famous canopy walkway. It's the world longest canopy walkway, covers the distance of 450 meters and 25 meters above the ground. The walkway is supported by the giant Tualang tree, the tallest tree in the rainforest. Tickets for the canopy walk cost RM5 and you can bought it at the entrance. The walkway is narrow and can get very shaky when you move very fast, the best way to enjoy is to walk slowly as if you are doing the cat walk. The view from the tree top was breathtaking. You can see the Tembeling river from here. Ah Keong is afraid of height, but he completed all the walkway. So brave of him. Some people go back half way because too scared to continue.

After having a great time at the canopy walkway, it's time to head back to Kuala Tahan for lunch. at this point my leg is swelling already. Next challenge for me to face is the 2.6km hike to Gua Telinga. Ah Keong skip this one.

taman17.jpg (24365 bytes)At 3pm, we took a boat to the opposite side of the river. Walk through the Wildlife Department's staff quarters and into the jungle again. There are another 2 guys going the same way with us. It took us one and a half hours to reach the cave. You can hire a boat to take you there, then continue by foot for 45 minutes. The boat can be hire at the Wildlife Department for RM30 per boat.

The cave is very small, narrow and totally dark. You need a very powerful torchlight to go in. We squeeze ourselves into the cave like going into the ears of a giant! That's why it is call the "Ear cave". Their flashlight isn't bright enough, so we helped them. One of these guy wear his expensive interview shoe to the cave and he is just too concern that he might spoil his precious shoe. So he took out his shoe and prefer to walk bare footed while inside the cave. I can't believe this guy! Some places in the cave is so narrow and low, you have to craw under it.

It's amazing to see many bats hanging upside down on the walls of the cave. Once they senses our present, they started to fly away. But they can't hit us because they have super sonar power! I saw one mother bat with her baby attached to her on her chest, but the baby position is upward which is the opposite from his mom. When there are bats around, there are guano. And it smells too. So be prepare for this. We also saw a big toad sitting on the rock, waiting to be kiss by a princess who pass by. Oh no way I am going to kiss that toad! Before we went in, we met a guide who already came out from the cave. He saw 2 racer snake lying on the rocks inside the cave. Unfortunately we didn't see it. Lucky for me too cause I am scared of snake.

It's already 5pm when we came out from the cave and it's time to go back before it's getting dark. Something amazing happen while we are one our way back. We saw a mouse dear moving around the bushes. It's just the size of a cat with big black eyes and a smooth brown coat. We stood still and later it disappear into the forest. It's a wonderful experience to see this beautiful creature in the wild.

We manage to get back before sunset, but it's already dark inside the jungle. I slipped and fell a couple of times, clumsy me, as usual. Kind of spooky when it's getting dark. Finally reach our chalet, took shower and rest for while before going for dinner.

8pm it's dinner time. I am so hungry. We have been hiking all day now, it's time to sit down and have  a nice dinner. We meet up with Ah Keong and Halim again, they were chatting with the souvenir owner near our chalet. And again he asked us to join them for dinner. It's fun hanging out with them, they like to tell funny stories. They are cool.
