Czech and Slovak Republics

My brother, Kevin, Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic Yes, these are now two countries, and make sure you're aware of that if you travel through here. The countries split up after the 1993 "Velvet Divorce." In the Czech Republic, Westernization is creeping in fast; Prague has become a magnet for people from all walks of life, and it's easy to see why: Prague is easliy one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Of course, a city like this also becomes a freak magnet, so be sure to see the countryside for at least a few days. Slovakia has not been as fast to accept economic reforms, but hopefully that'll change since Vladimiír Meciar, its autocratic leader, is gone. Both countries have small, charming towns, and visiting the mountains in Slovakia is a must. It's too bad Poprad wasn't chosen to host the 2006 Olympics: the town itself is dreary, but the High Tatras blessed me with one of the most stunning landscapes I've ever seen!
