P. Otaku Bytes: Features
[Content] [Editorial] [Columns] [Fanworks] [Anime101] [Reviews] [Endnotes]
Features: [Pokemon] [The Anime Chronicles]

Item: Mangas/Comics
Price Range: P200+-P1000+
Info: This is the fundamentals for anime fans. Most successful comics get adaptated into the animation format whether it be on film, T.V., or O.A.V.’s (Original Animated Video). They’re generally in black and white format but there are colored ones as well which usually feature those on T.V. or a movie or an O.A.V.. U.S. mangas are often a hybrid of colored (usually the first few pages) and available in either graphic novel format or Western style comics. Prices also vary from shop to shop. CATS and Comic Quest has a large supply of American-translated mangas but offers more expensive Japanese mangas while Anima Anime has low prices if you buy in bulk and if the series isn’t that popular yet.
Where to get: Anima Anime (Best buy for original Japanese mangas, in bulk), CATS (Purchase American mangas here. It is not advisable to buy Japanese or even Chinese-translated ones here), Comic Alley (for Chinese-translated ones and some Japanese ones), Comic Quest and Collector’s Guide.

Item: Videos
Price Range: P200-P2000+
Info: This is your favorite animes, all on video whether it be on VHS, Laserdisc, VCD or even DVD. Enjoy the luxury of watching your favorite shows anytime, anywhere you want! Lots of shops carry one of these mediums in one way or another. VCD and VHS is very common while original VHS are very expensive (the P2000+ range). DVD is a rare commodity which may probably be only found at CATS, if anywhere.
Where to get: CATS, Filbars, Anima Anime, Gaming Circle, Comic Express, Comic Alley, Specialty Toys (VCD sets).

Item: Art Materials
Price Range: P60-P10,000+
Info: For those budding artists, painters or just plain anime hobbyists, you need art materials for your designs. Special kinds of paint, brushes, pencils, erasers and other art tools are available in some common and not so common places. Check your local outlets first before seeking out the more “exotic” stores. Also, if you’re seriously into creating designs on various materials (shirts, wood), you might try airbrushes but they’re expensive to get and it takes awhile to get the hand of using them.
Where to get: Local bookstores, hardware shops, hobby shops, Specialty Toys.

Item: Japanese Learning Supplements
Price Range: P200-P1000
Info: So, want to learn Japanese but don’t have the time to take lessons? Well, learning materials are available locally. There are Japanese-English dictionaries and vice versa as well as writing and lesson books. If you’re planning to get lesson books, I recommend those that have cassette tapes so you know the proper pronunciation.
Where to get: Local bookstores.
Item: Miscellaneous Items
Price Range: P20-P400
Info: Whether they’re pencil boards, stationeries, folders or just those bits of stuff, they’re plainly nice to have and an ideal gift for practical anime fans.
Where to get: Comic Alley, Anima Anime, Collector’s Guide.
*Warning: Be sure to check if items are original or licensed versions. You can identify this by their logo and Japanese/Chinese characters as well as quality of the items. If possible, look for the company copyright symbols. Some toys, especially Gundam model kits and figures, have lots of poor imitation which may result in faulty design or wrong proportions.
