Scarpia - March 19, 20

Not quite sure how I am going to get to Scarpia, but I am determined to go. Scarpia is outside of Firenze about 10 miles off the highway from Bologna. The train doesn't run there, and I can't find a busline on the web. Hopefully I will find one in Italy, or get a lift from someone at the workshop.

Scarpia has a great castle. And incredible ceramics frescnos. Check out these photos and theAbbey. I am hoping that the light will be good so I can take pictures with my digital camera. I'll bring my labtop so I can upload them right away and take more pictures. These pictures will be a great SCA resource!

I found a few hotels (this one looks great), but don't have anything booked.

Scarperia, a small well-maintained town with a thriving and traditional cutlery trade. It still has its splendid crenellated Palazzo Pretorio, built in the small central square in the early 14th century to serve as a residence for the deputies of the Mugello area. A large number of stone and glazed ceramic coats of arms adorn the facade and courtyard, while the interior is decorated with numerous frescoes. Opposite the Palazzo Pretorio stands the church which contains two marble sculptures one by Mino da Fiesole and the other by Benedetto di Maia. Outside the church is a small oratory known as the Madonna della Piazza. Inside is a Gothic shrine with wreathed columns containing a Madonna and Child by Jacopo del Casentino, which is held in great veneration by local people. Nearby Scarperia there is the International Autodrome of Mugello, where they hold car and motorbike races.
