WELCOME TO MY DAY..
IT IS NICE TO HAVE YOU SHARE IT WITH ME...
Well folks, Christmas has been and gone, except for the leftovers and all the food we were given, and all the food we bought because our eyes and budget were bigger than our appetites, and bigger than our houseparty, which was kind of reduced this year with the younger son and his family fasting through Ramadan in Kuala Lumpur, with just hours to go before leaving for England and then Abu Dabai. Funny how three people missing can make such a difference, when one of them is only one year old.
It was all much less formal than usuaI. Bearing in mind the fact that two thirds of our guests would be children (sorry..one teenager, one teenybopper and four and a bit children), I did set up the tables in the semi-outdoors sunroom, (with LOTS of mosquito-zapping candles), which meant there was almost no swapping around of furniture required, and no worries about things getting spilled on silver grey carpets..and daughter-in-law Lizete arrived in time to set the tables for me, which was just as well because I did get caught up chatting by phone and online to some people I was missing a lot , even if they weren't celebrating Christmas, their celebration being either Hanukkah or Ramadan, and so all that extra time I thought I had just somehow..melted away..
Chris and Lizete and Astra arrived hungry, having, like us, missed out on Christmas lunch altogether, but we still waited for Fiona and her family to arrive for the ritual present opening. In fact, every year I suggest that some of us could open our gifts, or start on the first course, without waiting for the others, but every year I am firmly voted down.
And this year we had managed to make all the old family favourites.."scramble" , (oven-baked nibbles), Knight fudge, and our homemade version of Baileys Irish Cream liquor...the things the kids tell THEIR kids about and are disappointed if they don't see each year.
And it was very good that Josh, the only boy among our seven (and a bit) grandchildren, has finally gotten his reading act together enough to be Santa this year!
Well done, Josh!!
We were 12 at dinner, six adults and six children, and my ego survived having to cook a meal for a family party which now includes a Master Chef! I put him in charge of serving, insisting I would "defer to the professional" in serving 12, and he rose to the occasion.(.but in fact, it is my private opinion that he cut my marianated braised silverside beef too thickly, maybe to make ME feel better?..).
And now, Year 2001, the year of Hal,
And now, with Christmas and New Year over, I can enjoy some time off in January, and with air conditioning now, and the pool, life should be sweet indeed. I have a big birthday coming up, for which I need to be HERE, and then I have to sort out my travel priorities for the year..YES, I am coming back to USA! At least twice! And if anyone would like to organize me a JOB, I will stay longer or come over more often..but US Immigration officials look VERY unkindly upon an Australian lady wanting to enter their country too often or for longer than 90 days WITHOUT a job or a business venture..hmm...needs some thought!
But I'll keep you posted!
And this year, with no Muslim, Jewish or African guests, we could eat ham as well as turkey and beef..and cook things in sour cream....and very nice it was, too!
I did some work for the Eliza Project back in '86 and '87, so maybe if we really do have computers like Hal during my lifetime I can claim some minute share of the credits.Doubt it will be in 2001 though!
But I haven't forgotten what computers CAN do, and do well, which is bring people like US together, so here is my New Year (MP3)surprise for y'all!!...Just click on your gift right here!
