WELCOME TO MY DAY..
IT IS NICE TO HAVE YOU SHARE IT WITH ME...
Well folks, this is my neighbourhood just now....
And, yes, it has finally RAINED.....
In fact, as though calculated by some celestial draftsman, the heaviest rains fell exactly where our state has been most parched for the longest, so that we in Geelong, so used to the three years of water rationing, and losing our garden plants and our trees, and driving dirty cars, now find ourselved...er....AWASH!
In thirty six hours, our city was bewildered by 170mm of rain..that's almost 7inches...and the Otways catchment area, which feeds our city storage area, received a drenching 480mm...19 inches, to top up a city supply less than 15% of capacity.
And, incredibly, Geelong found itself virtually cut off from the rest of the state in several directions. Just when we had the Anzac holiday, and the reunions and marches in Melbourne, and the Football there, the Geelong to Melbourne Freeway had to be closed...
and this is the way I drive to work now..when the mountain isn't falling onto the road , of course....
So a lot of us are finding some strange and adventurous ways to get to and from work. For commuters to Melbourne, with the road at Lara virtually subject to tides, there is an uncertain meandering via backroads and lanes , or the train on its elevated track, which has meant emergency extra carriages and overcrowded station carparks. For those of us exiting Geelong to the west , the unromantic but relatively safe route through the cement works serves till our road around the mountain can be made secure once more.
We were let off easily at home with mere inconvenience and a lot of overflowing spouts anbd gutters, being almost on the top of the equivalent of Mt Ararat. In the lower-lying outer suburbs, a boat was the best , or only possible transport. And a lot of our land-owning, crop-planting customers have stopped praying for rain!
As for the animals....cats and dogs with their short memories stand puzzled, at doors and windows, but the farm beasties have had a rough time of it, with many, but not enough, being rescued by boat. Surfers in the sea at Torquay were stunned to find dozens of sheep feebly floating or paddling alongside, having been swept into the water hours before.
So now, after the days of rest Easter and Anzac Day allow us, it is back to the busy time of the year with Flu vaccinations and staff taking leave, and the cough and cold season in full sniff and sneeze , but brightened by our new red uniform shirts and lightened a little by preparations for Mothers' Day.
This year, our Mothers' Day giftstock is so pretty that I had a LOT Of trouble keeping it out of the hands of enthusiastic staff long enough to set up a Mothers' Day window after Easter, and then it proved so popular at once, with customers laybying it for Christmas, that I despair of keeping it until anywhere near May 13th.
And news, too, that the younger son is bringing his wife and daughter home from Abu Dabai for a brief visit from June 19th...their last, he stresses, "as a single child family".
Itchy Feet?
He said he thought he should give us warning in case I had planned to "take off' between mid-June and early July...
MOI?
Love to everyone ,and everyone on our side!
