美國將棒球奉為「國家娛樂」(National Pastime),其來有自。杜魯門總統在位時,設立了民權委員會,下令軍隊取消種族隔離,也因此聯邦政府任職的黑人日益增多。同時,兩個最重要的職業運動聯盟,大聯盟和NBA當局,開始接受黑人球員加盟。從90年代起,美國大聯盟成為全世界一流球員匯聚一堂的舞台,打破種族、膚色、國家、地域的圈限,頗有世界大同、和平競爭的意味。
在美國球場稱為Ball Park,有的稱為Stadium。過去的一個世紀中,美國的棒球場的設計一波一波的在演進。早期的球賽就只在圍著圍牆的場地中進行。在大城市內的球場,通常為了妥協擁擠的市區道路規劃,因而設計出不同的形狀。1923年Yankee Stadium 的建立後,球場規模開始愈來愈大。在1960年代,圓形建築、多用途和簡潔風格主宰了球場發展的風潮。過去十多年來,有超過一打以上的新落成球場,在球團們為增加球迷看球樂趣和收益的目的下開始啟用,而票也越來越貴(1858年明星賽門票只要50cent)。但有趣的是,近期落成的球場,都反而朝向復古風潮,模仿早期的球場特色。例如高聳的外野全壘打牆和磚牆結構。二十一世紀美國的球場,已經不只是看球的場所,同時也是享受美食和地方特色佳餚之處,觀看展覽之處,甚至在亞利桑那可以是游泳之處。你可以在不同各地嚐到如密爾瓦基的啤酒和臘腸(bratwurst)、巴爾的摩的蟹餅(crabcake)、堪薩斯城的BBQ、波士頓的海鮮濃湯(clam chowder)、和西雅圖的Sushi。目前總計大聯盟有球場30座,3A30座,2A及1A大約有100餘座,分佈又以美東密度較高。當然這是一個不容易完成的任務,我們僅希望以有限的時間和經費,把足跡遍佈各地,將我們所見及觀感作成記錄,並依個人經驗加上評比,以供參考。
