Hadrian was crowned Emperor of Rome in 117, and became
one of the empire's most accomplished and beloved rulers,
improving public works, enacting liberal legislation and
building walls to stay barbarian invasions. In 130
Hadrian's flawless consort, ANTINOUS, drowned in the Nile
while accompanying Hadrian on one of his many foreign
tours. Stricken with grief, Hadrian collapsed mentally

HIRSCHFELD,
Magnus (1868-1935) German sexologist
- Magnus Hirschfield was one of the first modern gay
rights activists. In 1897 he founded the
Scientific-Humanistic Committee, which advocated
homosexual rights through such efforts as the sponsorship
of the film "Anders als die Anderen" (Different
from the Others). He petitioned the German government for
repeal of the anti-gay law, "Section 175."
Hirschfield was a pioneer in the scientific study of
sexuality, and was called "The Einstein of
Sex." His work was banned by the Nazis, and the
famous photo of an early "book burning" depicts
the destruction of Hirschfield's Institute, though this
fact is rarely mentioned in captions of the photo.
Hirschfield was not only homosexual, but a transvestite

"sex deviants." That didn't stop the G-man from
having an intimate forty-year relationship with his
assistant Clyde Tolson, nor from being spotted at a Plaza
Hotel party reportedly wearing " . . . a black
chiffon dress, very short with ruffles, and black lace
stockings, high high shoes, a black curly wig, and black
false eyelashes." Hoover hung photos of nude women,
including Marilyn Monroe, on the walls of his home. He
used them as a "test" to determine the sexual
orientation of male visitors. Hoover was notorious for keeping dossiers on the sexual activities and preferences of public figures, including Presidents, Senators, Congressmen, Mayors, celebrities, and civil rights leaders. It could be said that his obsession with collecting information was a form of self-defense against those who might expose his own secrets. |

October 2, 1985, his close friend Elizabeth Taylor
expressed the feelings of many when she said "I love
him. He is tragically gone. Please God, he has not died
in vain." Hudson was the most popular public figure
to die of AIDS, having been a major star of film and
television for over thirty years. Hudson was discovered by gay agent Henry Wilson, who renamed him -- he was born Roy Harold Scherer, Jr. -- and got him his first picture, "Fighter Pilot" in 1948. Rock had only one line, but it took him 38 takes to get it right. Perseverance paid off, however, and by 1954 he was a star. In that year he played Bob Merrick in "Magnificent Obsession." In 1956 he was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in "Giant." He went on to make a series of popular films opposite Doris Day, including "Pillow Talk" (1959). In the 1970s he starred on TV in "McMillan and Wife" and appeared on "Dynasty" during the 1984-85 season. Rumors about his homosexuality had surfaced occasionally since the 1950s, when his film studio supposedly paid off "Confidential" magazine to prevent them from spilling the beans. To quell the rumors, in 1955 Hudson married his agent's secretary, Nancy Gates. The marriage lasted three years. Hudson's announcement in 1985 that he had AIDS sent shock waves around the world. After his death, his last lover, Marc Christian, sued the estate and won a large settlement, claiming Hudson had placed his life in danger by not telling him about Hudson's condition. |
