I have decided that I would add the remaining exhibition
matches that I had from my very first incarnation
of the pit. They make me feel nostalgic... The last
fight is a three way bout and it was definitely an
interesting one. I read the fights and actually feel
that my quality of writing was better four years ago
than it is now. I guess thats what happens when you
leave university. Your intelligence begins to slide
:)
Anyway I realize things have been slow lately but
I am trying hard to improve the speed at which the
fights get done. If you have submitted a request to
join and I seem to be out of touch I am not.. just
very busy.

I have a request to make. Would those people that
still haven't submitted tactics please do so. The
deadline is this Friday. At which point those who
haven't submitted tactics will have their fights done
regardless. I will attempt to post a few more exhibition
matches while we wait for week 11 to begin. Look for
these all this week :)

January 23, 2002
It seems that the early part of the week is beginning
to get horribly busy for me. Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
nights are practically write-offs for the next few
months due to evening courses. I have begun the week
11 fight and hopefully I should have it up soon. For
those that still haven't submitted tactics I ask that
you do very soon!! Anyway not much else to report.

Well can you imagine it. Week 10 is now complete which
also means that regular season fights are done!! Check
out Melquiades
and Ralmauthar for the final fight of regular
season! We are working dilegently on getting Week
11 done but I am still missing tactics!!! So if you
and your partener haven't submitted tactics yet then
hurry up!!! Thank you :)

January 16, 2002
I would like to apologize for the speed things are
going at the moment. Life is a touch busy these past
few days so I have not had a chance to complete the
remaining week 10 fight. My apologies to Ralmauthar
and Melquiades. But since I have been lax in my duties
I have decided to update the site with a few more
exhibition matches... six in fact with a short interlude
as well. These were from the first incarnation of
the Pit back in May of 1998. Check them out here.
They are fights 12-18. Oh... and I still have more
:)
Also does anyone have any interest in using the message
boards?

It has been awhile since my last update but I have
some stuff to report. First I would like to once again
congratulate Calathra for grasping hold of the title
of Pit Champion for season one! Now I know many of
you are probably crying out that the standings are
skewed... well yes they are. The standings will be
reworked for next season but this is how they stand
for this season. You should read the fight between
Calathra and
Shanna.
I have also redone the forum. I have decided to go
with another provider of the free service to get a
cleaner more user friendly look. I think this has
been achieved. Hmmm... I thought I had more to say...
Oh yes I do. You can go to the old forum here
if you want but I would like and recommend for all
new posts to be done at the new one. The new forum
is currently add free during a trial period (ending
in 5 days). I am looking into upgrading it to an ad
free one. The cost is minimal and if you feel you
would like to help out the board has an option to
make a donation. I'm not begging for hand outs, just
bringing it to people's attention :)
I am currently accepting submissions for DM's ONLY!
I have enough player's and submissions for characters
than I can shake a stick at... Why I would shake a
stick at them I don't know but if I did I would have
too many to do it. So please only submission for DM's.
And believe me when I say it is a fun and rewarding
experience!!! I actually mean that. It can be a lot
of work but having other people enjoy the time I put
into this is a good reward and I can only thank those
DM's that have helped me out so far. Thanks guys.

I have added the fight between Whisper
and Ackeron. Not a bad fight and it explains a
bit about the website change as well. I would like
to announce a few changes to the standing system for
next season. First I am attempting to devise a better
point system than what I have now. Right now player's
are ranked first by wins, then by ties and lastly
by losses. This system heavily favors characters that
have been around longer. I am looking at a ladder
system but it is not easy to mathematically devise
one that is accurate. I've run the current matches
through two different systems and they give reasonable
results but overall I am not happy yet. I have more
to do on this yet.

I have added some diagrams showing the basic Pit layout.
They aren't pretty but I hope they help. You can view
them by following the link at the right called Pit
Description or by clicking here.
You should all have a code now for submitting tactics.
Please keep it safe although I can't forsee anyone
trying to trick us by submitting fake tactics for
someone else. Well that is it for now.

UPDATE: This is in response to a post on the message
board but this is more permanent so I thought I would
post my answer here. It is long...
First. Tactics are a large part of the game... in
fact they are the most important part of the game.
A lot of the time the way we interpret the tactics
submitted may not be the way you intended for them
to be used. This is understandable in part and the
easiest way for this to be solved is to make sure
your tactics are as detailed as you want. Another
point on this is that sometimes one characters tactics
can disrupt what another character intends to do.
A lot of submit tactics involve not directly attacking
summoned creatures, etc. You mean to tell me that
when a character is being blocked by two or more creatures
and the only way through them is to accept AOO, that
you really want to not attack them? There are also
times when submitted tactics don't agree with the
rules of 3e. Most times this isn't noted until combat
begins and it is very difficult for DM's to stop what
they are doing, email for clarification, then pick
up the fight where it was left off once they get a
response. This is done during their free time. Now
don't get me wrong. I definitely see places where
tactics are being ignored and often tactics slip through
the cracks. But I am working on a better system for
all tactics to be collected and distributed to the
DM's quickly. The new tactic submission form on the
webpage is a starter. Now in order to help us in season
2 I would love for everyone to resubmit their tactics
based on what they have experienced in the Pit so
far. You should all be able to provide much more comprehensive
tactics now.
But I still agree that we as DM's need to use your
tactics. Sometimes it is hard not to do things the
way we think they should be done. So I do apologize.
In short:
Make your tactics as comprehensive as possible, easy
to read and well organized. Round by round breakdowns
are good, reactions to situations are good, prepared
spell lists are good.
Know the rules pertaining to your tactics. If you
are going to attempt to trip your opponent know the
rules and consequences of such.
The characters start with 95' between them. Remember
to include how this distance is covered and pay attention
to spell ranges. Many ranged weapons suffer severe
penalties at this distance.
---I still think we as DM's need to be more careful
with tactics though :)
The second point about showmanship. I'm not sure
how to implement something like this other than arbitrarily.
I am going to be devising a system for making winnings
more dependant on in arena performance. Currently
a portion of the winnings is determined randomly,
part is based on the level of the opponent defeated
and another portion is standard to both winner and
loser. I am thinking of a system that would mean more
money for superb hits, showy spells, unique tactics,
etc. As you can imagine a longer fight would have
more oppurtunities for such and would therfore net
more money. I am also thinking of devising a system
for number of fans. The more successful and showy
the larger fan base you acquire. This would mean little
more than in game prestige but it is an idea. Just
ideas to work with, to try and make the pit a better
place :)
-Torgal
At the request of a few individuals I am going to
facilitate submitting tactics for upcoming fights.
I have created a new page which contains a form for
submitting tactics directly to me. I will attempt
to streamline it but take a look. Please don't abuse
it since it will fill up my email box. The page is
here.

January 2, 2002 - HAPPY
NEW YEAR!!
Well the first post of the new year. I hope that this
year I can be more dedicated to getting fights posted
on time and increasing the size of the Pit. As you
have already seen I have redone the site in order
to help me maintain it better and to bring better
content to you, my audience. I shall use this space
today in order to explain some of the changes you
will see. I have done away with frames because they
bothered me. I have tried for a simpler navigation.
The fights are now in a clearer more uniform format.
There are other changes and more can be expected as
I find better ways to present information. But for
now I am concentrating on bringing you the fights
you have come to see. I have a few other things planned
as well.
Speaking of fights I have posted a fight between
Craningar Rue
and Crucibal Atesh. These two dark clerics bring
the might of their gods against each other but only
one can win...
For awhile now I have been promising to reveal how
the season will end. Well Week 11 as you know is 2-on-2
matches. Week 12 is going to be something a whole
lot different. Each DM is coming up with a special
match that they will run (first blood, no magic, one
handed, etc.) I will then be posting the combatants
for each match. You will then submit tactics for that
match. Pretty simple.
Originally the Pit was located in a World of my creation.
Then I moved it to the Forgotten Realms simply because
I had little time to be world creating. Well now I
have solved a problem. The Pit has been moved to its
own pocket dimension. It exists entirely between worlds
and therefore has made it very possible to have different
gods from different worlds. You'll read more of this
in the next few fights to be posted by me.
Anyway this post is getting long and I actually have
a day job that I should work at :)
Until later, may your 2002 start off wonderfully.
