"The Cantankerous Expert"


A Brief Background: Dr. Touka is a Zeiram expert and he appears in three episodes of the Iria OAV. In all the episodes he’s regarded as a brilliant scientist and like all brilliant scientists, he’s pretty stubborn.

Touka’s biggest contribution is when he discovered that Zeiram didn’t just kill his victims, he assimilated them. Cloning them with his own genetic material creating a ‘zeiramoid’. His theory is what convinced Iria that Gren was still alive somewhere inside Zeiram.

The good doctor also discovered a beacon that Zeiram had created to call other zeiramoids from other planets to help his forces on Myce. Bob got a hold of the information and passed it on to Iria and Kei who managed to destroy it. It proved to be the first step in Zeiram’s downfall.

Even when the Administration wouldn’t listen to him, Dr. Touka kept working to discover the true nature of Zeiram. A stubborn and ingenious scientist if ever there was one.

The Yeti’s Thoughts: Dr. Touka strikes me as the eternal skeptic, never wanting to confirm anything without proof. His constant saying, ‘It’s dangerous to assume anything’, seems to be the phrase to best describe him.

I suppose I can understand that though, even with proof and his position within the Administration, the higher-ups didn’t believe anything he said until it was too late. I guess I’d get a bit stingy too if nobody listened to my theories.

Useless Trivia: Dr. Touka is the last surviving member of the original Zeiram research team.
