How about a peep into other systems? So far we've been going through the Ptolemaic or Western system of astrology - but what of the others?

The Summerians, the Assyrians, the Mayans, all had very involved ways of astrology - but they've gone. We're left with the Hindu and the Chinese, both extremely difficult for European minds. The Hindu methods are even more precise than our own - but I think we'll leave that one for another day - when my brain can unravel it for you; so how about the Chinese - it has become very popular lately, with all the animal signs.

Do you know the story? The Lord Buddha gave a party, and invited all the creatures on Earth to attend. Only twelve animals turned up....

First came the Rat, twirling his whiskers and shouting "Me First", then the Buffalo plodded along followed by the Tiger, springing from side to side. The Cat came, smirking as only cats can do after they've had the cream - or the canary. With a mighty sound and lots of fireworks in came the Dragon and bellowed "I've arrived, let the party start". "Hold on, be still - there are more to come" said the Lord Buddha - Deflated Dragon! After a while the sexy Snake, slithered into view and trotting right after her, the faithful Horse with his friend the nervous but intelligent Goat - and, by the way, since then goats are kept with horses to avert sickness and evil.

With an awful crash the Monkey landed out of the trees. Poor Monkey so vain and easily fooled. When the racket died down and calm had been restored, the Rooster flew in - such a lot of cackle but he strutted so elegantly that all was forgiven; and peace returned - until the Dog ran up and tried to deprive him of his tail feathers.

Everyone was settling down to the feast when the very last guest arrived, Mr Pig, and dived into the food, pigs do like the nice things of life and sometimes don't ask permission to begin. No other animals turned up, so the Lord Buddha decided to honour these twelve guests, naming a year after each one of them, with their good and bad points. Therefore, depending in what period of the twelve year cycle you were born, the Chinese believe that you will inherit the aspects and character - good and bad - of that particular animal.
