Dave is known to be one of
the top saxophonists in the contemporary jazz market. He has certainly
made a name for himself in the States and in the overseas market as well.
One of the few trademarks of Dave's albums is that he can have different
grooves and sounds in each song in every album, making each song and every
album interesting. He displays his own sound on the saxophone, and
not pass off as a Kenny G wannabe (unlike some other sax players in the
"smooth jazz" market).
Here are the list of albums and credits of his albums so far: December Makes Me Feel This Way Featuring: Joey Diggs, Cole Basqué, Paulinho Da Costa, Tom Scott, Jeff Koz, Jeff Lorber, Alec Milstein, Paul Jackson Jr., Randy Jackson, Carlos Rios, Lenny Castro, and more. Dave's first solo album under Capitol Records. This was the album that sparked my interest in the saxophone and saxophone music. Dave's debut album features guest saxophonist Tom Scott (on EWI), whom Dave speaks of as being his saxophone icon. Dave also plays with Jeff Lorber, one of Dave's favourite players and friend, too. It also has Dave's own rendition of Richard Marx's Endless Summer Nights, and also the melodically beautiful Emily. This album is filled with R&B and rock influences that makes up Dave's sound. One of my favourite songs, besides the ones mentioned, is Castle of Dreams, a beautiful song he wrote with his brother Jeff Koz. Featuring: Nathan East, Jimmy Haslip, Carl Haslip, Paul Jackson Jr., Jeff Koz, Clarence Clemmons, Stephen "Doc" Kupka, Ricky Lawson, Robben Ford, Maceo Parker, Jeff Lorber, Alec Milstein, Edward James Olmos, Phil Perry, Greg Phillinganes, Charles Pettigrew, Steve Reid, Carlos Rios, Mark Schulman, Howard Buzzy Feiten, Claude Gaudette, Zelma Davis, Lenny Castro, Paulinho Da Costa, and more. Dave's second outing on Capitol. It features big names such as Jeff Lorber, Nathan East, Ricky Lawson, and more. This album shows one of Dave's better works, filled with R&B and rockish grooves, and beautiful ballads and sentimental songs. There's the hip but rather cute You Make Me Smile, a song he wrote about his niece, Taylor. There's also Sinaran (which apparently is available only in the Asian edition), a song popularised by the famous Malaysian songstress, Sheila Majid. Dave also does a beautiful duet with Phil Perry on Tender Is The Night, and a cool synth number with Zelma Davis (vocalist on C&C Music Factory) on Don't Look Any Further. The album also includes a ballad Faces Of The Heart, co-written with his brother Jeff, and chosen to be the theme song of the long-running ABC series General Hospital. There's also Saxman, a funky rhythm and blues number with guest saxophonists Clarence Clemmons, Stephen "Doc" Kupka, and Maceo Parker, with an introduction by Edward James Olmos. Robben Ford also guests in the funky R&B Shakin' The Shack. And the main theme of the album, Lucky Man, is a beautiful ballad done with guest vocalist Charles Pettigrew (of the Charles And Eddie fame). Featuring: Leo Kottke, Kenny Aronoff, Gregg Arreguin, Lenny Castro, Larry Corbett, Chuck Findley, Jeff Koz, Stevie Nicks, Tim Pierce, David Piltch, Mark Schulman, Chester Thompson, Brian Mann, Phil Ayling, Jamie Muhoberac, Sid Page, Greg Leisz, and more. This album truly reflects the name of the album, Off The Beaten Path (OTBP). This album, as the name implies, sees Dave thread on a different path in making his music. Here, Dave's music fuses 'organic', non-related-to-the-sax, instruments such as the violin, accordion, harmonica, mandolin, djembe, and much more, and he records these songs in a 'live' environment, without much use of over-dubbing. This album would show a much more personal and expressive side of Dave. OTBP is brilliantly produced by Thom Panunzio, whose credits include U2 and Fleetwood Mac. The songs in OTBP is well-done, including emotionally-provoking songs such as Don't Look Back, Under The Spell Of The Moon, and Awakenings, and upbeat, 'have-fun' songs, such as Wake Up Call, Flat Feet, My Back Porch, and the R&B number, Leave The Light On, not to forget Dave's own personally-written song I'm Ready, the mellow, emotional song Remembrance, Follow Me Home, Lullaby For A Rainy Night, and Let Me Count The Ways (with Stevie Nicks on vocals). One of the most rewarding part of this album is that Dave himself lends his voice for the song, That's The Way I Feel About You. This album is generally pleasant to listen to, and would make a special album to add into anyone's collection. This fourth outing is a holiday album from Dave to celebrate the spirit of Christmas, with Dave doing renditions of some of the most beautiful christmas standards, such as Have Yourself A Merry Christmas, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town, Little Drummer Boy, The Christmas Song, and more. Dave also adds in his own Christmas song, December Makes Me Feel This Way, with Dave featuring on vocals. The final offering for this album features the rap vocals of the late Phil Hartman in `Twas The Night Before Christmas. In this Christmas album, Dave manages to work with some of the OTBP band members, such as David Piltch, Bruce Watson, Phil Parlapiano, and of course his own brother Jeff Koz. And again, this beautiful album is produced by the brilliant Thom Panunzio. This is Dave's latest outing!
