This is my special tribute page to the one man that first inspired me to pick up the saxophone. Prior to this, I was like any other normal teenager, listening to your normal pop, rock, mainstream stuff that you hear a lot on the radio. Jazz was never an option for me.. (I could never understand it!). But it was until on that morning of the middle of 1991, when I read the daily paper The New Straits Times, in the Leisure section.... I saw this article. On it was a picture of a man, with long hair (sporting a Richard Marx look-alike), lying down on the pavement with his elbow supporting him, with a gleaming silver-coloured saxophone leaning against him. I started reading this article, and as I kept on reading, I found out his name was Dave Koz (wierd name....i thought!), and he's a young sax player who just released his debut album of the same name, and he was dropping by to Malaysia to promote that album. On that moment, I was intrigued! I was asking myself, "Hmm... I wonder what this guy is like. Is he good?? I've never really listened to jazz or saxophone music before?" I don't know what it was, but I was compelled to buy the album. Normally, I wouldn't even bother looking at sax players. Kenny G was already in the market long before Dave was. Anyway, I bought the Dave Koz cassette (I still have it now!!!). When I went home to listen.... there I was, sitting and listening to the radio, fully engrossed in his music! The next moment i knew, I told myself......I HAD TO PLAY THE SAXOPHONE!! Undoubtedly, I started pestering my dear mother who had to put up with me to let me play....not to mention the heavy price of getting a saxophone here! But dream became reality, after several months. But I did have my share of inconveniences, like getting cheated to buy a lousy, over-priced, low-end saxophone (how much does a beginner know anyway?), and shifting between teachers. But after 6 years, the saxophone is the one, main thing (next to my family, of course!) that brings me joy! It also acts also a really cool stress reliever! In a way, I also have won the hearts of new friends by playing the sax when I entered college! It was a pleasant experience for me!! I have only one thing to say about this....THANK YOU, DAVE!!! YOU ARE THE MAN!!!! Here's some of the stuff
that I have compiled about Dave. It's nothing new to KozFans, but
I would like to include it anyway:
