This is a special tribute site to one of the most awesome and influential saxophone players of our time (and to myself!), especially in the realm of contemporary jazz. A man of awesome talent, Eric derives his influence from Julian "Cannonball" Adderly, another influential and talented alto sax player of his time. Listen to Eric play and you can hear traces of Cannonball in his solos!!
I first 'discovered' Eric, when he came down to Malaysia in 1993, for a jazz festival held here, namely Jazz Malaysia '93 (which was pretty much shortlived). I met him in person while he was practicing in one of the venues, called Uncle Chilli's Fun Pub. I did talk to him for awhile, and we also took a picture together..talk about cool, eh? I went to check him out live at another venue later, and it was the first time I saw him play live, and it's an experience I will never forget! The next thing I knew, I got his One Touch cassette the next few days, and I couldn't get it off my cassette player! I knew at once, that this will be the man who will influence my playing. I started to collect his other CDs of his older albums, and I don't regret buying them at all.
Eric then came a couple of more times to promote his album, Street Dance, which is another cool album! During that time, he played at Barn Thai Jazzaurant, and out of the three times he came (after '93), I managed to see him play twice. Every show I went was always full of energy and vigour, he never fails to amaze me. One of the good thing about Eric is that he has this comfortable presence, where anyone who talks to him always feels comfortable doing so. He's not like your stereotypical superstar surrounded by bodyguards, but more like a friend you met a few years ago. He was nice enough to help me by giving me some sax-playing tips everytime I got him to chat with me (Thanks again, Eric). Bottomline is, Eric's a pretty much cool, fun, down-to-earth kind of guy... and ONE HELL OF A FANTASTIC SAX PLAYER!
