    Abbey

Abbey came to us as a 7-9 week old orphan with her right rear foot smashed beyond recognition and the middle finger of her right front paw broken. Abbey had endured weeks of raging infection in her back foot, causing it to swell beyond imagination which resulted in permanent deformity to the growth plates. At no time did Abbey allow this to hamper her in making friends with the raccoon orphans already in care as she tried to keep up with them in their daily games and play. Special ramps were built for Abbey as she could not climb the "practice" branches and limbs in their pre release cage. After many falls and much disappointment, Abbey learned how to climb in spite of her deformed foot, and had such a look of joy on her face it was hard to miss. When Fall and release time came, Abbey was held back but was so unhappy, it was decided to allow her to "try" and keep up with her classmates. Abbey's slow awkward gait and equally awkward climbing style forced her to be the first to go off and investigate with the others following. Abbey and her chosen best friend, Little Girl, made a wonderful den site in the oak tree not far from our house and made frequent nightly visits for peanuts, raisins and kibble. In early February, when Little Girl started coming in alone and was very distressed, we feared the worst. The early weeks of neglected infection had taken it's toll and Abbey's growing system could no longer support her. We weep for you Dear Abbey, but could never have denied you the precious few months of freedom you so dearly deserved and so blissfully spent being a free roaming wild raccoon.
