training and.riding. She manages a large stable of riding horses.
Their daughter,Katrina,at the age of six,competed in the State
Competition of Okla. in rodeo horse riding. In 1978 she rode in the

her Degree as Computer Operator in 197l. Later she attended L.C.C. and took
courses in Psychology. Sherry has also had training in Finances and.was
Funding Co-ordinator for "Model Cities" of Ingham Co. Health Dept.for
1973 and 1974. She. is now Medical Receptionist for two Lansing Doctors.

1964 in Barry Co. MI.. Harry F. Kurtz, Jr. graduated from Petoskey High School
in 1939. He
won a scholarship to Adrian College where he took ministerial work, then
changed to Science. He joined the Air force in 1942. After 9 mos.
training in San Antonio, Texas they were sent to Missouri and then for
advanced training in Wichita, Kansas. In 1943 they were at Houston,
Texas for transport flights. The high-light of that training was the
dance he had with Ava Gardner at the recreational center. He was ATC
in Medical and assisted in the malaria survey in Athens, Greece during
the Athens' revolution. Me served in the African Campaign and it was
here the Foreign Legion taught him to drink beer, in Merach, French
Africa. His work was in the dispensary after helping bring the wounded
into the air-field. In all these main battles he received only a sprained
ankle and minor injuries. He received an Honorable Discharge in 1946,
Serial #16160119.
Harry has had a very successful career with the UpJohn Co. of Kalamazoo
for many years. He is Biological Chemical Assistant in the Cardio-
Vascular Research Dept., which researches high blood pressure and diuretic
drugs. He met Velma Brouard, who was also in Research Dept. and the
mutual attraction resulted in happy marriage.
Harry and Velma both love animals and their home is idealy situated for
their.bird and animal feeders. Deer are often seen on thei:r lawn as are
other wild animals.
Harry enjoys fishing, camping and photography. He is especially interested
and knowledgable in Lapadary work and is very good with it.
Velma Cleora Brouard received her early schooling in a one-room school, a
mile from her home. Mrs. Farr was her only teacher for 8 years. Her high
school days were spent at Plainwell High, where she graduated in1934.
Her father died in 1935 as a result of a farm accident. Her mother passed
away 10 years later from a heart attack. Velma then made her home with a
sister and family at Hickory Corners, Michigan.
At this time she was employed at the UpJohn Co. of Kalamazoo where she
commuted each day. She has many happy memories of watching, loving and
helping raise five nieces and nephews.
On April 11, 1964, Velma married Harry F. Kurtz, Jr. at the Dewey's home
in Hickory Corners. They both worked'at UpJohn and commuted from Kalamazoo
to Crooked Lake, Delton for 5 years. In 1970 they moved into their new home
located on the homestead where she grew up. It is a Centennial Farm, being
in the same family since 1843.
Velma retired from UpJohn Co. in 1974 and has enjoyed being able to give
more time to her hobbies of sewing, refinishing furniture, making plaques
and decoupage, gardening and cooking. She remembers a maternal grand-
father and a paternal grandmother, the later being a descendant of Wm.
Bradford, Gov. of Plymouth Colony.
The Kurtzls enjoy entertaining their friends and relatives at the farm.
Harry is one of the best chefs at barquecuing meat.
