bullet Arnold Walter Sr. ROSEN(2) was born on 24 Aug 1891 in Chicago, ILL.. He died on 12 May 1961 in Lansing, MI. He was buried in Rutland township Cemetery Barry Co., MI.. Arnold Walter Rosen, Sr., attended Chicago Schools also attended night
School college courses. He was a shipping clerk for Swift & Co., also
purchasing agent for International Harvester Co., both of Chicago, Ill.
After marriage they moved to Hastings, MI in 1921. He owned a small
farm in Rutland Twp. This he sold and bought the Palm Garden ( Bakery
and Ice Cream Parlor) in Hastings. After four years chain stores began
to upset the private bakeries so he sold the business to a Mr. Hodges.
Arnold was a staunch Republican. While in Hastings, Probate Judge
Eggleston tried to persuade him to enter politics but that idea was
given up when he went to Lansing. He was employed in the Sec. of State
Dept. through the advice and influence of his friend, Supreme Court
Judge W. W. Potter of Hastings and Lansing. He worked here for 32 years
He was capable and conscientious and had many friends as was proven by
the many visitors and cards~during his long illness. After living in
Lansing for many years, they bought a farm approx. 20 miles, east of
Lansing in Shiawassee County. This was an ideal place to raise their
children. On January 11, 1955, while returning home from work, he
slipped on ice and broke his hip. Having had polio in this leg at the
age of three, the bone did not join even after two painful operations.
However, for six more years he led a useful and interesting life. His
combination chair and walker and his car , which he could still drive,
enabled him to continue in many of his hobbies. He was very interested
in the birds and animals along the stream and in the woods of the farm.
He renewed his interest in music. As a young man he had studied at the
Chicago Conservatory of Music and, as was the custom at that time, was
sent by the Conservatory to provide music for evening dinner parties in
private homes. Now he spent many hours at the piano and also composed
music. He never could be persuaded to try to publish his compositions
although friends and family urged him to do so. Arnold was an active
member of the Congregational Church in Chicago, an in interest he always
maintained. After moving to the farm in 1938 he was the one who revived
interest in the Graham Church which had been inactive for many years.
He consulted with the Methodist Minister of the Central Methodist Church
in Lansing, who advised and provided the Discipline to follow. He obtained
his friend, Rev. Hill of Lansing, to help organize the church and was their
minister for two years. Early in 1961 Arnold's health failed rapidly.
Sugar Diabetes had undermined his health. In May, 1961, the combination
of heart failure and cancer ended his patient suffering. He was laid to
rest beside his infant daughter, Eleanor, in the Rutland twp. Cemetery of
Barry County. His son, Charles, joined him in November, 1962.
