Notes

Civil War Service: Enlisted in Company H, 8th Illinois Cavalry in
December, 1862, and served as a "bugle boy". Was not in any of the large
battles. He was among those soldiers sent to hunt for Lincoln's killer.

His cousin, John C. Smith, fought in the Battle of Gettysburg. See "Family
History of John Wire Smith", by Mrs. H. P. Buckland.

John W. was discharged from the army on 1 June 1895. He refused to
accept a pension because he had not been injured in the war. He attended
business college in Chicago for one year.
