Meet Donna

You've already met me through some of the pages, but let me make our introduction a bit more formal. I was born in Washington and, except for a couple of years in Oregon and Utah, I've lived here all my life (50 years worth so far). I have two sisters, one 4 years older and one 4 years younger which makes me a middle child. I grew up in Puyallup, WA, home of the Western Washington State Fair and the mighty Puyallup Vikings and, after graduating from PHS, I went on to study art at Seattle Pacific College (now Seattle Pacific University) where I earned my BA and received my secondary teaching certificate. I taught art at Clarkston High School in Clarkston, WA, for 3 years. It was there that I met my husband Preston. We were married in 1976 and have 2 children. Preston was in retail at the time, and retail being somewhat like the army, we moved several times until settling in Sequim, WA, where we now live.

I manage to find plenty to do with my life, including being our church secretary/bookkeeper at Sequim Assembly of God, where I also teach the 3-4 year olds in our Wednesday Family Night program. I've been working with these precious preschoolers for 15 years. (Makes you wonder why I ever went into secondary education; you can learn why if you read my testimony.) I also sing on the worship team (I'm an alto). There never seems to be enough hours in the day to accomplish all the things I want to do, so I usually work on my hobbies in "season" - quilting and knitting in the winter, gardening and jogging (which might be better defined as plodding in my case) in the spring and summer.

I picked up the habit of doing crossword puzzles from my dad and I'm usually found at the kitchen table on Sunday afternoon with pen in hand. (Yes, pen...crossword puzzles should be done in pen to convince it that you mean business.) And just to keep things interesting, I make time year-round to write poetry and moderate at The Poetry Free-for-all, an internet poetry site. Good thing I'm a night owl. Life is good.

FORTY-NINE AND HOLDING

The sun had the audacity to rise
and scrutinize my squinting eyes with light.
"Malicious Sol, you're cruel! I despise
the glee displayed when you should mourn my plight."

Conspiracies arise at every turn--
Newspaper fonts are set at New Times one;
my bathroom scales tell lies and should be burned;
"New Math" has made the mile a longer run.

If governors can pardon crimes long past,
make them to be as though they never were,
(and since I look quite pale in sack and ash)
why can't a birthday clemancy procure?

I'm forty-nine? There's been a huge mistake!
I'll stay my age and have a slice of cake.

Chocolate . . . one of the 4 basic food groups!
Eat dessert first . . . life is uncertain!
