Virtual Tour Step 1
The Acquisition
Step one of any restoration project is of course, the acquisition of the object to be restored. This piano was found in the garage of a man living just outside Raleigh North Carolina. It was purchased by the author with the intent of restoring it for his own; however since then he has decided to part with this model and keep another for himself.
The piano is a Lyon & Healy "Washburn", and as you can see it's condition was not the best. It had some veneer damage and it appeared that the piano had been stored in a damp place for a considerable amount of time. The case itself was sound except that the bottom board had separated, and the sound board had also separated from the frame on the treble end. Most of the keys were stuck and the ones that were not sounded awful. A lot of the ivories were gone.
All in all the piano needed a lot of work, but was in good restorable condition. No one had ever attempted a restoration or repair in the past and the piano was found virtually untouched.
