Music

Let's face it.  The music in the 80's was really bad to say the least.  Anyone who really liked the music in the 80's would love Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton in the 90's.  Music of the 80s was at a dead standstill as far as originality.  You were either punk, heavy metal, or pop.

(IMHO)  Here are the Top 4 Albums of the 1980s.  (sorry I couldn't think of 10)Green: R.E.M.

1.  R.E.M. Green - probably the most unique and influential album of the decade...paved the way for alternative music to become accepted as a viable music form.
2.  U2  The Joshua Tree - another unique album.  It's long choords and deep meaningful song gave U2 the publicity and acceptance they deserved.
3.  U2 Rattle and Hum - follow up to The Joshua Tree.  U2 continued the success of its previous album combining both live versions of their Joshua Tree songs with their rentendation of blues songs.
4.  INXS Kick - a exit of punk and into a more into an alternative album (and you can dance to it too!).

In the year 1991, there was a new music video playing on MTV.  It was Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" video.  When I first saw it, I didn't know what type of music it was exactly.  It wasn't heavy metal, yet the lead singer had long hair like many heavy metal singers.  It definitely wasn't punk or pop.  The only name given to it by music critics was "Alternative,"  because it was alternative to the mainstream.  This type of music was brutally honest with non-traditional sounding lyrics.  In time, Pearl Jam replaced Guns and Roses, while Counting Crows replaced Genesis.  Alternative became mainstream.

(IMHO)  Here are the Top 10 Albums of the 1990s (so far).

 1.  Counting Crows:  August and Everything After
 2.  Pearl Jam:  Ten
 3.  Nirvana:  Nevermind
 4.  Wallflowers:  Bringing Down the Horse
 5.  R.E.M.:  Monster
 6.  Cracker - Kerosene Hat
 7.  Tom Petty:  Greatest Hits (although the majority of the album isn't from the 90's...it was issued in the 90s)
 8. R.E.M.:  Out of Time.
 9.  Better Than Ezra - Deluxe
10. Dave Matthews - Under the Table and Dreaming
