Elmer enrolled at Drake University the year it opened and attended one year. He went to Kansas to teach school at Mule Creek (later called Langley), Kansas. In 1896 his father wanted him to take charge of the farm after they moved to Carlisle from South English, Iowa. \footnote{This is from notes of Wilma Wickizer Rodgers, but I don't think this sentence about moving from South English in 1896 is correct, as other records show William and Nancy Jane lived in Des Moines as early as 1892. so the only part of the sentence I have any confidence in is that Elmer moved to the farm near Carlisle in 1896.} Elmer continued farming until 1908 when he became a partner in a general store in Carlisle. In 1918 the store was taken over by the partner and he purchased a share in a brick and tile plant in Knoxville, Iowa. He was appointed secretary of the firm and was a director. The business prospered for a time but business fell off and expenses increased causing the plant to close
Besides farming, Elmer was also the Carlisle school board president and town councilman in 1912.
