MY TENNESSEE ROOTS
IRVINE,MORAN,ROGERS,HAWKINS,HARRIS
In the course of working on this and other genealogy , word got out to some cousins that I didn't know existed from all over the country. I have been doing genealogy for over 25 years and have hit "brick walls" on some of them. With help from others we have all been able to fill each other in on details we were missing. I have been able to supply pictures to them as some that our family has are the only ones known to exist, and now they can see who their ancestors were also.
ISN'T GENEALOGY WONDERFUL!
I don't think I will ever get past all the elusive ancestors though.
Sometimes I imagine them sitting up in the clouds somewhere smiling down on all of us who are taking the time to get to "know" them. They are probably having a good laugh when they see the dead ends we chase about . And just when I begin to really think kindly of them and think they made it easy for me...I discover that every family member in every branch and twig had the same name and lived in the same place at the same time.
My thanks to all who brought me back from wild goose chases and steered me back in the right direction. Bless you!!!!
One of my Tennessee roots began with a man in Virginia .That man's name was Walter Irvine and it is from him that I am descended. Walter's story from what I have managed to piece together is told here.
I believe Walter to be descended from the family of Irvine's who came to Philadelphia on the "George and Ann" in the late 1720's. It took me years to find Walter as so many records burned in so many places..however I feel confident that in time I will find the couple of generations that will tie it all in to the group in Pa.
UPDATE..well I cannot tie them directly in with them but a cousin had DNA done and he descends from the Border Reiver Irvine group and seems the group mentioned above does also. We are kin anway. I think at this point perhaps Walter did come over from Ireland since he does not appear in the U.S. until a short time before he marries.
I had a little info to start with and that was erroneous so I had to start from scratch and use the birth place for his son and go back.
Walter it seems had a brother, Samuel, and they married 1st cousins with the same name.
Walter married Ann Fitzhugh Rose in Amherst Co in 1790 ..she was d/o Col. Patrick Rose.
Samuel married Ann Fitzhugh Rose d/o of Hugh Rose in Amherst Co in 1794.
I have also begun to realize from Samuel's will that they probably were not young men.
I have more info on Samuel than on Walter but he went to Lynchburg Co and Walter went to Buckingham Co Va . The court records in Buckingham Co were all destroyed by fire. Some land records had been abstracted by Roger Ward and published. That is how I first found Walter and then later his estate. Also some of Samuel's legal documents mentioned him and his place of residence. So I had proof that he was there, which after years of searching almost brought me to tears.
I discovered also , thanks to Bill Parker , a descendent of Samuel , that a Gordon had reported in his accounts that he had hired horse to go to Buckingham Co in a settlement of Walter's estate.
Then discovered Walter's obituary in 2 papers.
He was a propety owner at New Canton and was a merchant there.
With some of the info..it was sheer luck but not so easy most of the time.
UPDATE..New found information that I located in Va. provided definate proof of BOTH of his children, more on the areas he was in and more of his activites.
It took several trips there but I was also visiting my daughter and was in easy driving distance to the Library of Va.
Thank you to all that helped solve what seemed impossible and who sent info, gave tips, and kept a look out in case there was any scrap of info to be found. I cannot thank each of you enough. The Rootsweb mailing lists are a wonderful source of information, support and help. To Debbie , Bill, Bryan, thank you..to Judy thanks for your support when I would grumble about "dead ends"..... to Martha and others who may never see this..you still have my deepest gratitude.

MORAN
The first of my Morans that I know about, came to Kentucky from Virginia, according to family reports, with Daniel Boone to Boonesborough. John Moran and Agnes Miller came there as small children with their respective parents (unknown).
UPDATE the following story appeared in an article regarding the Moran family in Dresden Tenn. HOWEVER this story has been pretty much disproven but it does make for interesting reading.SO HERE IT IS.. Both children's parents were killed by Indians and they were raised by Col. Henderson. Col Henderson was the head of the Transylvania Co. and the purchaser of land from the Indians that later became part of the state of KY..it was known as the Henderson Purchase. These children grew up , married each other and named their first child after him.
NOW for the most likely events...NO Where in any of the Boone or Boonesborough records does it mention a Moran. Records in Amherst Co. Va. do mention John Moran as a child and a James Henderson who takes him to Ky with him..the James Henderson family and John Moran and his son James Henderson Moran have close personal contacts between each other apparently throughout their lifetimes.
It is entirely possible that Agnes Miller who married John Moran may have been raised by someone as there were a number of Millers in the various Boone parties and some did die, but, even that family tradition could be in error.
Col. Richard Henderson spent some time in KY but never brought his wife there and returned home. In the time span allowed for his being there it is pretty well impossible for him to have taken in and raised children. This apparently was mixed up generations ago with James Henderson who for the most part adopted John Moran.
I have had a few minor breakthroughs since starting this page so it now has a little more info.

HAWKINS
This line has been a puzzle of sorts also(aren't they all). At least I can now feel rest assured I am from the Philomen Hawkins line.
Without going in to the great detail of that line with all of its generations back..I will only touch on them here.
The information on this line is well researched and recorded many places.
There were several Philomen Hawkins down through the generations.
Benjamin Franklin Hawkins was born Oct. 1787 to Philomen Hawkins III and Lucy Davis Hawkins. He married Sarah/Salley Person Sept . 1807.
Benjamin graduated from the Univ. of NC along with his brother Joseph Warren Hawkins in 1805.
Thomas Person Hawkins born Feb. 9, 1808 married 1st Mary F. Boyd daughter of Robert and Tabitha Walker Boyd 2nd married Salley/Sarah Rhea/Ray in Gallatin Tenn in 1848.
Thomas was a Dr. and was known as T.P. Hawkins

They had children:
Thomas E. Fitzgerald
Laura Fitzgerald
Col. Fitzgerald was killed in Civil War and "Miss Pat" as Martha Elizabeth was nicknamed remarried
2nd husband was John A. Rogers a judge and attorney in Dresden Tenn.
Children of this marriage:
MARY BOYD ROGERS born 1870 married James Albert Irvine(my grandparents)
John A. Rogers Jr...died in Long Beach Ca. earthquake in 1933
See Irvine line above
Thomas (T.P.) Hawkins appears on Dresden census in 1870 and is mentioned in copy of old deed concerning property boundry in Dresden in 1872. I have located no other record after that and not on 1880 census. I assume he is deceased by this time.
He had lived in Weakley Co. for some years , from all accounts around the Mt. Pelia area, he is known to have been in Weakley Co. at the time of his second marriage and for some years before as evidenced by docs. in Weakley. He lived for a time around New Madrid Mo. as is also evidenced by court docs. in Weakley and his being on the Mo. census. He apparently moved to Dresden around the time or just before his daughter married John A. Rogers.... My father could remember his mother and grandmother taking out his doctor's bag when he was young and seeing his instruments but it disappeared and he never knew what happened to it.
Info on Thomases birth from his grandfather Philomen Hawkins III bible ..transcription in N.C archives.
Marriage record to Sarah
Legal doc and census ..Weakley Co Tenn.
