The picture below is the original picture of John A. Rogers Sr. in the Weakley Co. Tennessee courthouse in Dresden, Tenn.
This is a good view of how the courthouse looked.Sad to say it burned in the late 1940's. John was my great grandfather and was an attorney and circuit vourt judge there for many years. He was also circuit judge in Lake Co and other surrounding counties.
An interesting story about the courthouse...there was a cupola on top of the courthouse and during the Civil War the sentry would ride his horse up into the cupola and watch for any advancing troops on Dresden. The steps leading up to the cupola had the hoof prints of the horses that went up there.
While a horse might have been willing to do that ..other animals were not.
One morning the townspeople could hear a cow in obvious distress..checking behind all buildings and finding nothing..someone noticed the sound came from above..it seems some Dresden boys had led a cow up the steps during the night and left her. While is was easy to lead her up it was very hard to get her to come down , and seems to have taken alot of effort to bring her down to safety. Not sure if the culprits were ever caught.
A picture of my grandfather James A. "Bump" Irvine's store in Dresden Tenn.
Known as the Irvine Cash Groc Co.
My uncle John is to right of pic..have no idea who others are..if you know please advise .
Baby picture of the late Forrest Ferguson who was postmaster at Greenfield for some years . He was the son of Sophia Irvine Ferguson and Charles Ferguson of Dresden. He married Tommie Little also of Dresden. "Ferg" as he was known to us was my dad's first cousin. A truly delightful person.
Isham G. Harris
Not a Dresden native although his cousin and my great great grandmother Harriet Harris Moran lived there.
Gov. of Tenn during Civil War and then US Senator afterward..he died while serving in Senate.
This is a picture of him later in life..my grandfather would write "dead " or "alive" on pictures sometimes.
