The mission is a man Directed by: Steven Spielberg Genre: Drama, war & action The plot: In a military cemetery in Normandy (France), a group of persons are walking behind an old war veteran. We won't know who the man is until the end of the movie. The group stops in front of a grave. The camera focuses on the old man's eyes and the real story begins. We can now see Tom Hanks on a boat approaching Normandy. The boat lands on the beach and the most beautiful and violent war scene begins. Steven Spielberg manages to show us the horror of war through very violent but realistic scenes. A long fight and lots of deaths later, the Germans are eliminated and Tom Hanks (Captain Miller) stares at the beach. The camera focuses on his eyes which makes the spectator think Tom Hanks is the old man. The camera leaves Hanks' eyes to focus on a dead soldier on the beach. On his bag, we can see his name: "S. Ryan". Back to the US, women are writing letters to the family of dead soldiers. We learn that a mother is going to receive the news of the death of 3 of her 4 sons, from which the dead soldier called "S. Ryan". These 3 dead soldiers had a brother: Private James Francis Ryan who has been dropped by parachute in Normandy. A mission is decided to find this soldier and send him back to his mother as soon as possible. The mission will be directed by Tom Hanks and 8 of his men. After a quest through Normandy, Hanks' men find Private Ryan but he refuses to go home. Their group who has already lost a few men has to fight against german soldiers and finally only 3 men stay alive: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon (Private Ryan) and Edward Burns (Private Reiben). Now we think they're all going to get back to America but Tom Hanks is hurt and dies which is a great surprise since we thought Tom Hanks was the old man. In fact, the man is Private Ryan himself. The last picture of the movie shows us the old Ryan standing before Captain Miller's grave. Back to Saving Private Ryan: Actors, Comments and mark |
