How Sandy Hook got a K-9 Narcotics Unit?
Two Coast Guard officers named Glen Cambell and Dan Newman wanted to start a K-9 narcotics unit at Station Sandy Hook, and with the permission of the XO Rusty Merritt the two quickly seeked the help of a qualified trainer. LT. Mark Webber(RET.) of the Union County Sheriff's Department was the expert trainer they needed. With well over 400 trained dogs under his belt he was glad to take on the new task. On his own time he came down to Sandy Hook and trained all the Sandy Hook Narcotic detector dogs. For the Coast Guard he has trained K-9s BO, JAKE, BUDDY, HANNA, MAGGIE, and another dog named JAKE free of charge. Our idea was to have Sandy Hook as a training center for other Coast Guard K-9. Since the Coast Guard is a drug enforcement agency, it only makes sense to have CG K-9's at high traffic drug areas. We have worked closely with many other agencies since we have acquired the drug dogs. Thank you Mark Webber for the time and effort you put in to excite my Coast Guard career, and hopefully a future career.
